Target: U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon
Goal: End faith-based child abuse in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
In the Democratic Republic of Congo, children are subjected to the most cruel forms of abuse after being accused by church leaders of showing signs of witchcraft. The factors that may be considered when a child is determined to be harboring some sort of spirit are based entirely on the opinion of the pastor. However, parents may bring their children forward if they are wetting the bed or having bad nightmares. Without any doubt, they are automatically presumed to be showing signs of demonic possession.
Pastors have the children line up and they pick out each child that they believe has “kindoki,” which is another word for magical powers. The accused are tortured, starved, isolated and beaten until they are believed to be free of the so-called demons inside of them. So far as many as 50,000 children have been abused as a part of the ongoing phenomenon, and many of them are still being held in churches. The families and pastors who participate try to justify their actions by claiming that they are just trying to rid the children of their witchcraft.
These rituals are horrific and those involved should be arrested and charged with child abuse. Sign the petition below to demand that those behind this practice are punished.
Dear Secretary General Ban Ki-moon,
Thousands of children in the Democratic Republic of Congo are being beaten and tortured in the most brutal way. Young children are wrongfully accused of witchcraft and completely disowned by their communities. The fate of these children is decided by a single Pastor who may randomly decide that a particular child has been taken over by some sort of spirit. Even the victims’ parents strongly believe that their children are possessed and in need of some sort of healing.
Many of the children who are suspected of witchcraft are even sent away from their homes to live on the streets. There are currently more than 25,000 children living on the streets without shelter or food, and many will never be able to return home due to the misguided faith-based child abuse practice. These innocent children deserve justice and they should not be left to deal with years of abuse.
I urge you to put an end to this practice and punish everyone involved to ensure that children are protected from harm and neglect.
