Target: Tom Vilsack, Secretary of Agriculture
Goal: Praise the order for more strict oversight that will protect farm animals from abuse.
An animal research center in Clay Center, Nebraska, has been ordered to stop all new experiments and projects until their procedures are updated and more oversight within the center is produced. This is good news for the animals at the center, such as sheep, pigs, and cows, due to the pain and abuse they were suffering at this research lab.
In an earlier petition, we urged the research center to stop its cruel experiments that resulted in animals being being born deformed, susceptible to illness, and living a life of pain and premature death. Reports surfaced that claimed the research center was forcing ewes to give birth to lambs in open fields where they were more likely to die of starvation or from predators. Other reports claimed that cows and pigs were undergoing experiments that doubled the size of their litters, but problems occurred which caused many of these litters to fall sick and die.
The Department of Agriculture heard the concerns over the experiments and ordered an oversight panel to investigate. The panel didn’t say that the animals were being mistreated, but confirmed that the animal research center was “not adequately fulfilling its intended role” for making sure that the animal’s pain and suffering was minimized as much as possible. The oversight panel also said that the animal research lab needed more oversight after the internal reports revealed the pain and suffering farm animals were going through.
The Secretary of Agriculture, Tom Vilsack, ordered this panel after hearing about the horrible stories regarding farm animals at the center. Please sign the petition below to thank him for taking action and halting further experimentation until more oversight is provided for the research center.
Dear Mr. Vilsack,
I would like to thank you for ordering more strict oversight at the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center in Clay Center, Nebraska after hearing reports of disturbing animal experimentation. The alarming reports stated that at least 6,500 animals have starved at the research center.
The extreme experimentation is driven by the agricultural industry’s hope to increase profits by increasing the size of the litters that animals yield. The animal research center has gone too far and is creating an environment filled with pain and deformed animals. This is sickening and the research center needs to be reigned in before more deaths occur.
It is great to hear that someone has heard the public outcry over such alarming experiments and taken action to stop the research center and add more strict oversight. Thank you for exercising good judgement and caring about the animals at this research center.
