Stop Endorsing Monsanto in Healthy Living Magazine

Target: Kathy Kuza, Northwestern Advertising Sales Director at Shape

Goal: Stop all advertisement and endorsement of Monsanto in Shape.

Monsanto recently placed an advertisement in Shape Magazine, giving the message of partnering with farmers to feed the world with sustainable agriculture. A Monsanto ad in Shape Magazine is unacceptable and ironic, considering Monsanto’s practices are far from the healthful values of the magazine. We look to resources like Shape for trustworthy, healthy advice, and this ad is deceitful at best.

Monsanto has a growing public image problem. As the public’s distrust in genetically modified organisms (GMOs) increases, the company is pulling out all the stops to try to fix the way consumers see the Big Agriculture business. It is well known that Monsanto’s practices are not the healthiest choice when it comes to feeding yourself or your family. The company that champions herbicide-resistant seeds is about growing more plants in less time to make more money.

Monsanto is a company that sues small farmers and destroys crop diversity, and it is trying to say it will feed the world. There is nothing sustainable or healthy about potentially hazardous genetically engineered crops. There is nothing sustainable about resistant weeds and pests that require more and more chemicals to curb. There is nothing sustainable about mass production of mono-crops like corn and soy, which go to feed the beef industry, not the people of the world.

This company’s ad is in total contradiction of Shape Magazine’s promotion of organic health and a green lifestyle. It does not make sense to have Monsanto’s ad alongside articles about wellness through fruits and vegetables. Readers of Shape deserve to see truthful advertising about companies who actually care about sustainability and health. Sign the petition to demand that Shape Magazine, one of the most popular health and fitness magazines in the country, withdraw its advertising with Monsanto.

Dear Ms. Kuza,

Your health magazine recently published a Monsanto ad that talks about eating healthily and living sustainably. This is quite concerning given the Big Ag company’s nonorganic practices and products. Monsanto is a company that has little regard for human or environmental health and, therefore, should not be supported by Shape.

As health-minded and informed people, your consumers like to read about ways to live and eat consciously. They do their best to choose organic food for their tables and try to make the best decisions when it comes to sustainability. Seeing an ad by Monsanto in your magazine is misleading and sends an entirely wrong message to your readers.

The pages of Shape promote a healthy lifestyle for women through organic produce, fitness, and sustainable living. Monsanto’s heavy use of pesticides directly violates any sort of sustainability and is certainly not healthy for our bodies. Your readers deserve to see ads from ethical companies who truly care about organic living and wellness.

With this petition, we respectfully ask that you please remove Monsanto advertising from future publications and not endorse them again. The company’s practices do not support the same values as Shape Magazine and should not be promoted.

  1. Just shows how unreliable the media is. Believe nothing you hear and half of what you see.
