Support Solar Plane’s Journey Around the World

NASA's solar plane

Target: Pilot Andre Borschberg and Bertrand Piccard

Goal: Applaud pilots Borschberg and Piccard for creating a sustainable, solar-powered airplane.

Two Swiss pilots by the names of Andre Borschberg and Bertrand Piccard are completing a journey around the world in a solar-powered airplane. The flight is expected to last five months, and the pilots will be trading places and educating the public about the importance of sustainable energy. If these pilots complete the 21,000-mile journey their plane will be the first of its kind to not consume a drop of gasoline. Fueled only by the sun, the plane is a marvel of ingenuity and design. Applaud the creation of this plane, and support the pilots’ journey around the world.

Called the Solar Impulse 2, the plane’s cockpit is only big enough to fit one person. The seat cover can be removed to access a toilet, as there is no room to install a lavatory in the plane, or reclined into a short bed. With a wingspan of 236 feet, it is larger than a Boeing 787-8, but weighs only 5,000 pounds in comparison. It runs on 17,000 solar cells, and powerful lithium batteries to trap the sun’s energy and keep the plane going when evening falls. It’s expected to reach high attitudes where it can capture the sun’s rays. Unfortunately these high elevations pose risks to the pilots, who can suffer from altitude sickness and cold weather. To combat these conditions, the pilots will be wearing clothing to ward off the cold, and will be supplied with energy and protein bars.

The plane’s design is new and has not been replicated by the aviation industry: in short, this plane is one-of-a-kind. The success of this plane could aid in the search of sustainable solutions for our way of life. Diesel-fueled planes and cars are already polluting our environment, causing climate change and dirtying our atmosphere. If the aviation industry used planes that ran on solar power instead of diesel it would reduce the amount of smog on our planet. Please support the pilots’ five-month journey across the world by signing this petition.

Dear Andre Borschberg and Bertrand Piccard,

National Geographic has been buzzing about the journey you two are taking around the world in your solar-powered plane. A feat such as the one you’re undertaking has never been completed before, but its success would be revolutionary for the sake of our environment. With the amount of air pollution that exists on our planet, replacing our diesel-fueled planes with solar-powered ones would be revolutionary for our environment.

I know that this trip will be grueling for the both of you, and test the limits of your human endurance, but you can do this. I wish you the best of luck on your trip, and I hope the both of you will return home safely.
