Target: Supreme Leader of Iran, Ali Khamenei
Goal: Strike down law that forces women to procreate to obtain birth control.
Iran is attempting to block access to and information about contraception for women, and also require women to have children before accessing these rights. Two bills, if passed, will severely limit the way contraceptives are used in Iran and put women at risk of unsafe abortions. Iran is trying to boost its declining population, but these laws are not the safest or most ethical ways to solve this problem. Sign this petition and urge Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei to terminate these bills as they stomp on the rights of women.
There are many hardships that women face in Iran. According to Amnesty International, women are allowed to divorce only if they are facing “unbearable hardship” but men are allowed to divorce without providing any reason. When testifying in court, a woman’s word will not have as much value or impact as a man’s. Another new bill will make it difficult for women to find work. If this bill is passed, men will be prioritized over women, especially if these men have children. Unfortunately, this bill along with the two that force women to pump out children are about to be passed.
Women are not baby making machines, but this is how the Iranian government is treating them. Acquiring information about birth control or condoms is extremely difficult. Without this knowledge or access to birth control, women are forced to carry their pregnancies to term or risk having unsafe abortions. According to the World Health Organization, unsafe abortions are the leading cause for maternal death.
This bill does nothing to aid women’s rights. If anything, all it does is undermine them as human beings. Women are not objects, they are not toys, and they are not baby making machines. Women are people who have feelings and are capable of thinking for themselves. Sign this petition and urge Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei to terminate this heinous bill that violates women’s rights.
Dear Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei,
Two new bills are up for review in your government. These bills undermine the rights of women in your country, as they force them to have a child to get access to birth control. This is extremely hypocritical, as birth control is meant to prevent having children or allow a woman to have a child when she is ready for parenthood. These bills ignore women’s reproductive rights and instead places these rights in the hands of men and the government.
I am absolutely appalled that bills like this could pass. Women are not baby making machines, as these bills suggest, but are people who are capable of thinking. These bills argue that women are nothing more than vessels meant to carry children. I understand that your country is concerned about the declining population, but forcing women to bear children–whether or not they are ready for parenthood–is not ethical. Reproductive rights need to be acknowledged. I urge you to strike down these bills and refuse to make them into law.
