Target: J. Richard Cohen, President of the Southern Poverty Law Center
Goal: Classify racist fraternity as a hate group to protect minorities.
A recently released video depicts a bus full of drunk, white, fraternity members singing a racist chant with such gusto that one would think it was the early 19th century. This hate was quickly dealt with by Oklahoma University officials, who expelled several students and shut down the fraternity, but that is not enough. This fraternity, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, must be classified a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center in order for it to be tracked and protect minorities from its bigotry.
The vile chant has no place in civilized discourse. Suffice it to say, however, that it specifically singles out black people and encourages violence against them. The issue here goes beyond a small group of drunk, privileged, white racists. This chant was taught to these people, presumably by someone in a leadership role within the fraternity. This means that the racism of SAE at Oklahoma University is not an anomaly—it is systemic and widespread. People are spreading this hate through centers for higher learning and something must be done to stop it.
The SPLC is one of the biggest organizations tracking hate groups in the United States. Once a group is designated as a hate group, they are then monitored by outside organizations who work collaboratively with the FBI to ensure that no violence can come from them. This group must be watched carefully in the coming years if it is not shut down altogether. Racism is clearly alive and well but it can be put to an end. Please sign here to demand that this hate stop now.
Dear Mr. Cohen,
A recently surfaced video of a group of white fraternity brothers singing a racist chant has shown us all that racism is still alive and well in this country. Some of the students in question were expelled from Oklahoma University in response and the fraternity was shut down, but these steps are not enough.
This is not just a group of privileged, drunk, white teenagers—this is systemic racism. Those seen chanting in the video claim that they were taught this chant, presumably by someone with a leadership role within the frat, and it sounded as if it were traditional. I will not write out the chant here, as it is vile and does not bear repeating, but it singles out black people and encourages violence against them.
For all of these reasons, I would like to ask that the fraternity in question, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, be classified as a hate group and tracked accordingly. This group must be monitored closely in the coming years to ensure that no violence or hate speech goes unchecked
