Ban Animal Gas Chambers

Target: Dr. William Brown, Kansas Animal Health Commissioner

Goal: Ban the use of gas chambers to euthanize animals.

Lawmakers in Kansas could ban the use of gas chambers, or carbon monoxide, to euthanize pets in the care of animal shelters and veterinary clinics if a recently presented bill passes. The slow death of an animal in a gas chamber is horrific. In the most fortunate situations, it takes several minutes. The animals can smell the vomit, blood and feces of animals before it who have died in the chamber. Many times the animal slowly chokes to death or may not fully die, requiring a second run through the chamber.

This kind of euthanasia is not only inhumane to these poor animals, it can pose a threat to humans as well. When the animals are being put in the chamber, they can often become so frightened that they bite and scratch at the person trying to place them in.

The Topeka-Capitol Journal reported that Courtney Thomas, President of the Great Plains Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, said that chambers are actually more expensive to operate than alternatives and require maintenance and proper equipment to run well.

In past years, Kansas has been ranked in the lower half of the country when it comes to the protection of animal welfare. It’s time stricter laws and regulations are passed to ensure animal lives are cared for, and when they cannot be cared for, they are put down in a humane manner. By signing this petition, you will urge the Kansas Animal Health Commissioner to assist in passing a law that would ban gas chambers as a form of euthanasia.

Dear Dr. Brown,

Animal activists in your state recently introduced a bill that would ban the sickening use of gas chambers in euthanizing animals at shelters and in veterinary clinics. The slow and horrifying death of an animal through the use of a gas chamber involves the animal choking to death while smelling the feces, blood and vomit of animals who have died before it. There are alternatives to this incredibly inhumane form of euthanasia, so this ban is completely reasonable.

In recent years, Kansas has been in the bottom of the rankings when it comes to taking a strong stance on animal welfare. Bans such as this will help to ensure that animal lives are cared for, and even in death they are cared for in a humane manner. I urge you to assist in passing the law that would ban gas chambers as a form of euthanasia for animals.
