Target: President Barack Obama
Goal: Provide aid for refugees displaced in Nigeria and neighboring countries.
The terror group Boko Haram has killed thousands of Nigerians in a series of planned attacks. Their terror tactics involve mass shootings and suicide bombings. So far the group has brutally murdered more than 13,000 people and they’ve driven 1.5 million frightened Nigerians out of the country since 2009.
The Red Cross has officially labeled the situation in Nigeria a humanitarian crisis as people have started to flee into neighboring regions to escape the ongoing violence. Many have relocated into Chad, a region on the border of Nigeria. Boko Haram has planned attacks on the region after learning the whereabouts of the refugees. Millions of people are afraid and fighting desperately to survive. Without an influx of outside help, many of these innocent people will not survive the harsh conditions or the violence.
While the Red Cross has become more active in the region in terms of providing aid, there just aren’t enough supplies to go around. Jean Yves-Clemenzo, spokesperson for the International Committee of The Red Cross, told reporters in Geneva “The situation is very, very difficult.”
It’s apparent that the scale of damage that has been caused in Nigeria is unexpected, but now that it has escalated into a full-blown crisis there should be a significant response to match the devastation. Sign the petition below to support efforts to resolve the worsening situation in Nigeria.
Dear President Barack Obama,
The conflict in Nigeria is worsening as there are thousands of people migrating out of the country everyday. Something needs to be done to resolve the crisis in the country before it is too late. We must send additional aid to compensate for the increase in refugees as they are crossing into neighboring countries like Niger and Chad, which lack both shelter and usable resources. Thousands of displaced Nigerians go days without clean water or food while fighting to survive in the most inhospitable conditions.
The Red Cross has assisted with providing food, household items, sanitary facilities and medical facilities, but they agree that more needs to be done.We can’t merely sit back and watch refugee camps grow from thousands to being filled way over capacity with millions of occupants.
I urge you to value the lives of these people and send help in the form of both aid workers and resources to ease the pain that Boko Haram has inflicted upon the people of Nigeria.
