Target: David Cameron, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland
Goal: Demand justice for victims of domestic abuse in the UK.
A man brutally beat his wife on their wedding night and received no jail time. According to an article in the Daily Mail, Amy Dawson’s new husband allegedly threw her to the floor on their wedding night and punched her repeatedly. She was badly injured, and left the scene with bruises on her chest and face, along with a cut eyebrow. She later reported that she feared for her life: “I thought I was going to die. He looked like he was going to kill me.” Dawson was eventually able to escape the room and call for help.
The incident reportedly began when the woman’s husband was unable to get her wedding dress off. Apparently he couldn’t unfasten it, which prompted him to shove her to the ground, sit on top of her, and beat her. Gavin Golightly plead guilty to the charges in court, and was given two years of supervision, along with some fines. Dawson said that this sentence was far too light, and many critics agree. Golightly later claimed that he had been drugged and could not remember the event.
A wedding night should be one of the most joyful and loving events in the life of a couple, and it should never spiral into this kind of chaos. Spouses should feel loved and protected on their wedding night. Please sign this petition to demand that domestic violence in the UK is taken seriously.
Dear Prime Minister Cameron,
A woman was recently beaten by her new husband on their wedding night, and the man received no jail time. Reading about this case has prompted me to wonder if domestic violence is taken seriously in the UK. I feel that something is wrong with the legal system when a man can brutally beat his wife and still evade jail time.
Apparently, Gavin Golightly became angered when he could not get his wife’s dress off, so he slammed her to the floor and began to beat her. He claims that he had been under the influence of drugs at the time, and that he cannot recall the event. Even if this story is true, I believe that he still poses a threat to himself and to the well-being of others.
I hope that this case will act as a wake-up call to lawmakers in your country, demonstrating the need for more effective litigation when it comes to domestic violence. I ask that you please do everything in your power to make this a reality.
