Target: David Boren, President of The University of Oklahoma
Goal: Conduct a detailed investigation fraternity members’ racist video and punish them if found guilty.
University of Oklahoma fraternity Sigma Alpha Epsilon has been under investigation for a racist video that went viral. Allegedly members of this fraternity are shown in a video chanting an extremely prejudiced song that references hanging, and that members are not allowed in if they are a certain skin color. President David Boren is reported to be investigating but this must be done to the fullest. The University has to set a precedent in order for others to understand the implications of their actions. To have people promoting such hate and violence as if it’s nothing is a truly scary thing.
Lynching is a horrific and vicious occurrence it is not something to speak of encouragingly. When one preaches hate more hate follows. National members of Sigma Alpha Epsilon have spoken out against the disgusting chant stating they do not want their fraternity represented in such way. The fraternity house has been shut down and members were asked to leave. All these are great responses but represent little steps in terms of what needs to be done if members are found guilty. There needs to be a meeting with the school, and educational training as to why one shouldn’t say hurtful things. Free speech is an amazing gift, and we must use it as such. When one says extremely offensive things he or she is causing pain, and sparking potential violence.
By signing this petition you are saying that injustice and racism should not be tolerated. You are declaring that one should be punished for inciting brutality and repression.
Dear David Boren,
Sigma Alpha Epsilon’s alleged viral racist video chant is very appalling. I know you cannot be held responsible for everything your students say and you are against this behavior but more needs to be done. It was reported that you have kicked the fraternity off campus, and protested with the students, which are commendable actions. Yet despite your efforts you need to make clear that this behavior is completely unacceptable. If the students are found guilty they should be reprimanded to the fullest degree. You also need to have training classes, demonstrations, and anything else to ease racial tension, and to try to prevent further incidents like this from occurring again.
Racism is something that one cannot turn a blind eye to. We need to be encouraged to discuss issues of bigotry and hate in order to learn from them. College is a transition period, which is a perfect time for one to grow not just academically but also emotionally. Students need to understand the difference between freedom of speech and talk of hostility and bloodshed.
I’m urging you to guarantee a very in-depth investigation, and to take the essential actions that follow. You need to use this horrible event as an example of your university’s policy towards intolerance.
