Target: Colorado Senate Majority Leader Mark Scheffel
Goal: Prevent LGBT youth from being forced into dangerous conversion therapy.
Parents of children who aren’t straight or cisgender will no longer be able to force them into “conversion therapy” in Colorado if a proposal by State Representative Paul Rosenthal becomes law. Being gay or trans is not a psychological disorder and should not be treated as such. Demand that this proposal is passed into law.
Representative Rosenthal’s legislation would ban mental health practitioners from pursuing the controversial practice of conversion therapy with minors. Conversion therapy is a sham treatment that has been disowned by the psychological establishment and is no longer considered credible.
Indeed, this is for good reason. Conversion therapy has been a contributing factor in countless suicides by LGBT minors who were forced into the treatment by their unsupportive parents and taught to be ashamed of who they are. Preventing children from being forced into this treatment in Colorado will spare many LGBT youth unnecessary psychological stress and, hopefully, save many lives.
Unfortunately only California, New Jersey, and Washington D.C. have such bans in place at the moment. Sign the petition below to demand that Representative Rosenthal’s proposal become law so that Colorado can be added to that progressive list.
Dear Senator Scheffel,
I am writing you today regarding a piece of legislation that will arrive in your chamber for the senate’s vote shortly. Introduced by Representative Paul Rosenthal, the proposal would ban the practice of gay conversion therapy with minors in your state. This is a vital issue that should not be subject to any petty partisan bickering.
The mainstream psychological establishment no longer considers homosexuality or identifying with genders other than those one was assigned at birth to be mental disorders. LGBT minors being forced into therapy with the express purpose of addressing their “mental disorders” of orientation and gender identity is, consequently, wrong on scientific grounds.
Besides that, though, doing so also increases the shame many of these young people have been conditioned to feel about themselves in the first place, often leading them into a depressive spiral that results in their attempted or completed suicides. Conversion therapy is downright dangerous—it has no place in your state.
Since Representative Rosenthal’s legislation has already passed the House, it falls on you as the Senate Majority Leader to ensure that this bill is approved in the Senate by your Republican majority so it can move on to Governor Hickenlooper. I urge you to do everything you can to collect enough votes to pass this legislation.
