Target: Mayor of Washington D.C., Vincent Gray
Goal: Applaud ban on gay conversion therapy.
Washington D.C. recently moved to ban gay conversion therapy for minors, according to an article by MSNBC. Gay conversion therapy aims to change a person’s sexual orientation from homosexual to heterosexual, and this controversial method is still practiced in many areas of the United States today. According to MSNBC, both the American Psychological Association and the American Medical Association have denounced the practice as ineffective.
Adults have the right to do what they want, but minors are often at the mercy of their parents. Children in their teenage years are at a particularly fragile stage in their development, as they’re just starting to get a sense of who they are. Gay conversion therapy tries to make them feel bad about themselves and mold them into something that they’re not. This is arguably unhealthy for an adult, but it could be downright damaging to a kid. The topic of homosexuality places a lot of strain on families because younger kids rebel against their more conservative parents. Gay conversion therapy only serves to exacerbate this strain, since it makes kids feel that they are being forced to change their identity.
Although the bill still has to clear Washington D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray and Congress, the fact that it has made it as far as it has should be commended. Sign this petition to thank the mayor of the District of Columbia for moving to ban gay conversion therapy for minors, and urge him to give this bill the go-ahead.
Dear Mayor Gray,
I am happy to hear of the new bill that is in the works to ban gay conversion therapy for minors in Washington D.C. I feel that this form of therapy denigrates a person’s identity and pressures them to change themselves needlessly. Furthermore, I worry that this form of therapy is especially damaging to youth, who are just beginning to discover their identity. Bigoted parents shouldn’t have the right to pressure their children into such therapy. People who proclaim to be gay should not be forced to conform; rather, they should have it made clear to them that they are loved and cared for.
I understand that this bill still has to be approved by you and Congress, and I urge you to let this bill pass, so that gay conversion therapy cannot be imposed on minors. I feel that Washington D.C. could set a precedent for the rest of the nation by condemning this kind of therapy.
