Target: U.S. President Barack Obama
Goal: Provide funding to programs that provide essential school supplies to schools in Haiti.
Around 5,000 schools were destroyed during the devastating earthquake in Haiti five years ago. Education has been lowered on the list of priorities for the people of Haiti who have been struggling to survive, as 80 percent of the population is living below the country’s poverty line. The lack of access to schools and educational resources has attributed to the declining rate of children who enroll every year. In fact, more than 50 percent of primary-school-age children are not currently enrolled.
For those who are enrolled there is very limited access to the resources that are essential for sending a child to school. Supplies like books and backpacks are scarce, which makes learning nearly impossible.
School in Haiti is much more than just a place where children go to learn. For many children who come from impoverished communities, school is the only outlet and escape from the conditions of their home life. The ramifications for not allowing a child to receive an education can be detrimental to the child’s future and survival. After the earthquake many children were orphaned and thousands remain separated from their families. Half a million children are currently living in camps or on the streets of Haiti. Without access to education programs, these children will not have any chance at improving their circumstance.
Sign the petition below to support efforts to provide adequate funding for essential school supplies and programs for the children of Haiti.
Dear President Barack Obama,
The children of Haiti are not attending school at the rates in which they should, compared to children in other countries. This is largely due to a lack of access to basic school supplies like writing utensils, backpacks and books.
Many programs like Save the Children are on the ground in Haiti providing these supplies to many of the country’s poorest communities. Although they have been able to support millions of children as they successfully journey through each grade, without sufficient funding every child will not be able to attend school fully equipped to learn. In addition to providing access to education programs, Save the Children is working to improve the quality of the education they are receiving. A sufficient amount of school supplies would greatly improve the quality of the education every child in Haiti deserves to obtain.
I urge you to provide funding for the programs that are actively fighting to improve the quality of every student’s education in Haiti.
