Create Online Support for Spouses of Alcoholics

Target: Cathy Wilde, Communications Director at Research Institute on Addiction

Goal: Make online support for spouses of alcoholics readily available.

The Research Institute of Addictions at the University of Buffalo has been experimenting with an online support program for spouses of alcoholics. Participants have shown improvement in coping techniques, as well as decreased feelings of depression, anger, and anxiety. The program has not yet been widely implemented due to insufficient funding and matters of accessibility. Should this program come to fruition, it would greatly impact families everywhere. Urge the Research Institute on Addiction to push forward with the proposed program, and do everything in its power to increase funding and availability.

Resources for spouses of alcoholics are severely limited due to insurance, finance, stigma, and a slew of other factors. Mental health resources as a whole are already limited, especially when the individual seeking help is experiencing the effects of addiction rather than addiction firsthand.

The proposed program utilizes presentations, dramatization, instructions, and coping techniques to benefit both halves of the relationship. Hectic schedules will not deter individuals from seeking help, as they can access the program in the privacy of their own homes and from an electronic device. Many spouses will feel more comfortable with this method of treatment, and the program will reach a larger audience.

Please sign this petition to urge the Research Institute on Addiction to continue its efforts to address the needs of spouses of alcoholics.

Dear Ms. Wilde,

I am extremely pleased to see huge strides forward for the Research Institute of Addiction regarding spouses of alcoholics. The proposed online program to aid in coping with an alcoholic spouse is an excellent tool for families everywhere. Several factors prevent individuals from getting the help they need, and this program can eliminate many of those obstacles. I urge you to implement this program and continue to find funding for this amazing treatment method.

The concept of an online program to help spouses of alcoholics will revolutionize health care. Our society often struggles to give people the resources they need, especially as we experience a growing trend towards electronic devices and instant gratification. This program utilizes these trends to deliver a resource that will prove most effective for all lifestyles.

Those with hectic schedules, or those who are simply too afraid to seek help in person, will now have an important resource at their fingertips. If this program were to fall by the wayside, it would be a missed opportunity to help so many in need. Please continue efforts to increase funding and play an important role in helping so many families.
