Target: Donna P. Korn, Chair of the School Board of Broward County
Goal: Fire teacher who allegedly repeatedly called Muslim student a “rag-head Taliban.”
Fourteen-year-old Muslim student Deyab-Houssein Wardani says that he was repeatedly called a “rag-head Taliban” by his French teacher at his school in Broward County, Florida. The school district has launched an investigation but says it will only suspend the teacher for five days as punishment. Demand that the teacher be fired immediately if the allegations are found to be true.
These allegations are disgusting. Unfortunately though, it would not be terribly surprising if they were true. Anti-Muslim sentiment is at record highs in America, and Muslims around the country are being subjected to violence and aggression with increasing frequency. Apparently, that hate even extends to Muslim children. That a teacher would feel comfortable enough to use these slurs to address a Muslim student repeatedly over the course of several days, as Wardani contends, goes to show just how deep the problem of Islamophobia is in this country.
Such language should never be tolerated in our society, especially by educators towards children. Demand that the teacher, if found to be guilty by the school district’s investigation of the allegations leveled against her, be fired without delay.
Dear Chair Korn,
I am writing you today regarding the allegations that Deyab-Houssein Wardani has leveled against his French teacher. I understand that you are currently conducting an investigation into the accusations. I urge you to take appropriate action against the teacher if your investigation comes up positive.
As I’m sure you are aware, Wardani is saying that he was repeatedly called a “rag-head Taliban” by his teacher because he is a Muslim. If these allegations are true, this teacher has no business being in any position of power over students. Clearly, she is both shamelessly racist and shamelessly Islamophobic, and apparently has no qualms creating a racist and anti-Muslim classroom environment that actively singles out, threatens, and throws slurs at Muslim students. Racism alone is enough of a justification for firing a teacher—but the kind of malevolent dehumanization that seems to have taken place here is even more beyond the pale.
It’s being reported that the option of firing this teacher is not on the table and that she will only face, at most, five days of suspension if found responsible. This is appallingly inappropriate. I demand that you fire her without delay if your investigation proves Wardani’s accusations against the teacher.
