Target: Dan Noll, Principal of White Oak High School
Goal: Don’t read Bible passages to students during morning announcements.
Students at White Oak High School are forced to listen to Bible readings every morning as part of the school’s daily announcements, according to audio recordings released to the media. This is a violation of national religious freedom laws. Demand that Principal Dan Noll, the man who allegedly reads the Bible to students, immediately cease this illegal activity.
According to recordings made by a student at the high school, Principal Noll regularly intersperses Bible verses into his daily morning announcements to the student body. Since White Oak High School is a public school, this is illegal. Abington School District v. Schempp, the 1963 Supreme Court case, affirmed the illegality of Bible readings like these in public schools, and time and time again since 1963 that illegality has been upheld in other court cases. Because public schools are funded by the government, and because the government is constrained by the First Amendment on matters of religion, public schools cannot force religious material on students.
Such blatant violations of students’ right to religious freedom cannot be abided. Sign the petition below to demand that Principal Noll end his Bible readings in White Oak High School immediately.
Dear Principal Noll,
I am writing you today regarding audio recordings that have recently come to light that apparently show you repeatedly reciting Bible verses during morning announcements to the student body at White Oak High School. These readings are illegal and should be ended at once.
If you were the principal of a private religious school, this would not be an issue at all. Unfortunately, however, you are not—you are in charge of a public school. Public schools are subject to the same restrictions as the government when it comes to religion. That is to say, neither the government nor the public schools that the government funds can establish a favored religion or prohibit the free exercise thereof. Your inclusion of Bible excerpts in the morning announcements is tantamount to the establishment of a favored religion within the public school.
It’s perfectly fine for you to hold these beliefs, but you cannot espouse them within the context of being White Oak High School’s principal. I demand that you end including any and all references to the Bible in your daily announcements.
