Target: Ms. Kamala Harris, California Attorney General
Goal: Denounce extreme ballot measure that would criminalize homosexuality.
A California lawyer is attempting to criminalize homosexuality and make it punishable by death. The lawyer filed paperwork with the State Attorney General’s office that would allow him to begin the process of getting this proposal put on a ballot for people to vote on.
There are a number of reasons why this idea is beyond crazy and offensive, but the most important among them is that the intent here is to murder people for their lifestyles. This goes beyond what people have come to expect of those who oppose equality and falls somewhere in the category of insanity. Something must be done to ensure that this proposal never reaches a ballot.
The problem here is not that the proposal will succeed. There are enough progressive and like-minded individuals to ensure that, plus it’s hard to imagine even the staunchest “traditional marriage” supporters thinking that gay people should be put to death. The real problem is that this is offensive to every living and breathing person, gay or straight. This is hate speech and an incitement to violence against a minority population, plain and simple. Not to mention the fact that the Supreme Court of the United States ruled in 2003 that same-sex sexual activity is legal in every state.
It comes as no surprise that this is a religiously motivated campaign. The proposal includes language about how same-sex relationships are abominations against god and is made up of statements like this: “Any person who willingly touches another person of the same gender for purposes of sexual gratification will be put to death by bullets to the head.” This kind of rhetoric is not acceptable in the modern world and something must be done to ensure that this proposal is not allowed to offend anyone else. Please sign below to ensure that this proposal never sees the light of day.
Dear Attorney General Harris,
A lawyer in your state is attempting to criminalize homosexuality and make it punishable by death. I do not know your personal or professional feelings on this matter, but I feel safe in assuming that you agree that a proposal such as this is unacceptable. I do not have any fear that something so full of hate and violence would succeed in your fine state, however I believe it must never be allowed to see the light of day.
I understand that the lawyer in question has taken the necessary steps to begin getting an issue put on a ballot, but this is nothing short of hate speech and an incitement to violence. This cannot be allowed to even be voted upon, let alone passed. This proposal is offensive to all people, gay and straight, and I demand that you ensure it never makes its way to being a ballot measure. This religiously motivated bigotry is sickening and I hope that you put an end to it as soon as possible.
