Target: United States President Barack Obama
Goal: Urge the President to implement the recommendations of his policing task force in order to save innocent lives and restore faith in law enforcement
All civilian deaths in law enforcement custody, or at the hands of police officers, should be reported to the federal government and be subject to independent investigation. Policies that encourage racial profiling and discrimination must be banned to help prevent the death of innocent men, women and childen. All officers should be well trained in de-escalation rather than forgiven for shooting as a first resort.
Sadly police departments across the United States fail to follow this common sense advice, and faith in law enforcement has suffered because of it. President Obama brought together the Task Force on 21st Century Policing to help address the crisis, asking the group to conduct research and provide recommendations. Its recently issued interim report highlights a troubling lack of accountability in law enforcement and calls for life-saving changes.
“People are more likely to obey the law when they believe those who are enforcing it have the right—the legitimate authority—to tell them what to do,” the report explains. “Building trust and legitimacy, therefore, is not just a policing issue. It involves all components of the criminal justice system and is inextricably bound to bedrock issues affecting the community such as poverty, education, and public health.”
The American Civil Liberties Union and other advocacy groups have hailed the report’s findings and called for its recommendations to be enacted. Urge President Obama to break the pattern of unchecked violence and move forward with these vital policing reforms.
Dear Mr. President,
Each week the news stings with stories of unchecked police brutality: mentally ill individuals, unarmed men and women and innocent children beaten and gunned down. The attackers in uniform often escape without consequence while the victims’ families are left to piece together shattered lives.
You convened the President’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing because the lack of accountability in law enforcement has become epidemic. The task force took its work seriously, conducting thorough research and presenting policy recommendations that can save lives and restore trust in law enforcement. Now it falls on you to ensure that these recommendations are put in place in departments across the nation.
Please, Mr. President, put a stop to the widespread racial profiling, discrimination and brutality. Demand that every officer involved death is reported to the federal government and independently investigated. Do all in your power to ensure that the task force’s sound counsel becomes the law of the land.
