Target: U.S. President Barack Obama
Goal: Allocate funds to provide desperately needed aid to children orphaned by the Ebola virus.
The increase in orphaned children due to the Ebola outbreak has caused concerns for an emergence of child trafficking and illegal adoptions, as many are left wandering the streets for long periods of time. Many organizations have been able to provide relief for thousands of these children, but they are lacking sufficient funding to ensure that their services are available for every child in need.
According to the CDC, the Ebola virus has claimed the lives of 9,714 people in Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone. While the infection rates have slowed, the suffering of the children living in the most affected areas has not. Over 11,000 children have lost either one or both parents to the deadly virus, and they’ve been left with little to nothing.
Many of the children that have been orphaned by ebola are traumatized by the experience as most of them witnessed the death of their parents. Not long after watching their mothers and fathers suffer a great deal, the children are sent to care facilities during the duration of Ebola’s incubation period of 3 weeks to ensure that they are not infected. After they are deemed free from the virus, they are sent to live with relatives. If the child doesn’t have any relatives, or if they aren’t welcomed home by their family members, they are sent to live in orphanages.
Sign the petition below to urge President Barack Obama to allocate funding to support efforts to diminish the impact of the ebola crisis.
Dear U.S. President Barack Obama,
The children of the thousands of people who lost their battles with Ebola do not deserve to suffer any longer. International aid agencies like UNICEF need help with providing relief to these children who have not only lost their families, but also their own shot at living a normal life.
Both UNICEF and Save the Children are agencies that are actively engaged in the Ebola crisis and they provide both physical and psychological care to survivors and orphans. They provide protection, education and food security to children in need. Without proper funding, these organizations will only be able to operate with limited resources and without any long-term care solutions for children who are left without any family to care for them.
I urge you to ensure that funds are made available to assist aid organizations in their mission to support children who are relying on outside help for their survival.
