Target: Circuit Judge J. Dale Durrance

Goal: Praise judge for sentencing a man to 25 years in prison for dogfighting.

A man was recently sentenced to 25 years in prison for dogfighting and animal cruelty, according to an article in Highlands Today. The sentence prompted much controversy, but it was well deserved. Dogfighting is the practice of taking two dogs and forcing them to fight each other for the amusement of a crowd. The dogs usually sustain severe injuries, and in this case the presiding judge, J. Dale Durrance, reported that the dogs had scars, open sores, and broken teeth. He also noted that it was unfortunate that the 11 dogs that were forced to fight were not able to speak for themselves and voice their opinion on the sentence.

Dogfighting is a despicable crime that inflicts immeasurable cruelty on an innocent animal. Such gladiatorial competitions are of a different age; they represent the worst in humanity, and should be prosecuted to the fullest extent. Not only do the people who organize them exhibit clear signs of psychopathic tendencies, but they are also putting the public at risk by raising dogs to be violent.

People can say what they want about the length of the sentence, but it cannot be denied that this action sends a clear message that this sort of cruelty cannot and will not be tolerated. Sign this petition to thank Judge Durrance for ruling in favor of man’s best friend.

Dear Judge Durrance,

I want to thank you for sentencing James Thomas Reed to 25 years in prison for dogfighting. Although some of your critics have denounced this sentence as being too harsh, I feel that it was warranted. Dogfighting is one of the most hideous practices imaginable. Its level of barbarity resembles something that might be seen in medieval times, but certainly not in 21st century America. Those who commit such atrocities are worthy of severe penalties, even if those penalties are denounced as Draconian.

As I’m sure you know, dogs are curious, sensitive, and innocent creatures. They have been friends of our species for ages, and they do not deserve this kind of treatment. If an animal has the capacity to feel distress, pain, and suffering, then it is worthy of our moral and legal consideration. Scientific evidence indicates that those criteria are met in dogs.

Also, if someone can do such horrible things to an innocent animal, what might they do to another person? I believe that people who organize dogfighting events are a danger to society because they demonstrate a clear lack of empathy.

I hope that this sentence will act as a deterrent to others; it lets people know that dogfighting will not be tolerated. Thank you for this just sentence.

Abuse is the ultimate betrayal towards any living soul and absolutely heartbreaking all the way around. You simply can not do such a horrific thing without it killing the best in you. Period. But in case there are any out there who couldn’t care less about torturing animals – which says a lot about you, as well – then think on this: If you find people happily willing to hurt an animal in any way, they are actually finding a venue to act out their deepest, most inner evil fantasies of twisted sickness. There’s nothing more revolting than that. Aside from this, it has been proven over and over again that people who have horrid intents with animals, get bored with them soon enough, ultimately leading them to bigger prey, moving up to people, in order to re-ignite and enhance the excitement that the torturing of animals used to provide. It’s simply never enough. And do not forget, these horrendous monsters also end up raising their children in “the game”, breeding evil, little sickos to continue on “the trade”… no doubt causing abuse in every level of their lives, as well. It’s just a revolting cycle that will never end until someone gets into it and breaks the heart-wrenching pattern. So, even if an animal is not of your utmost concern, then note that it will not stop there. It is just a start. And it is just a matter of time.
