Target: Salman Khan, Creator of Khan Academy
Goal: Praise teacher for providing free online education.
Anyone with an internet connection can now access course content that was previously available to college students only, thanks to a website called Khan Academy. You can sign up for Khan Academy at no charge, and you’re instantly given access to a huge range of online courses that have been created with the express purpose of providing a free education to anyone who is willing to get it. Students on Khan Academy can choose from a wide variety of courses, from multivariable calculus to ancient history.
Each course is organized into a series of YouTube videos, in which the teacher, usually Sal Khan himself, takes you through the course content step by step. Small quizzes are sometimes given in between videos to test how much you have learned.
The internet has opened up unprecedented new vistas for higher education, and Khan Academy is one of many websites that now provides free course content that would otherwise cost thousands of dollars at a traditional university. The website has its share of critics, but it is irrefutable that Khan Academy is an influential resource for anyone who wants to learn new academic concepts, or just supplement real-life courses.
Although some argue that Khan Academy has pedagogical flaws, such as a lack of sufficient testing, it is one of the single best efforts to provide free online education. New course content is constantly being added, and such efforts to provide the world with a free education should be strongly commended. Not only does it provide education, which is the remedy to many societal ills, but it also lays the groundwork for future projects in online education. Sign this petition to praise Salman Khan for the excellent work he is doing at Khan Academy.
Dear Salman Khan,
I want to thank you for the excellent educational content that you are providing the world. Thanks to Khan Academy, anyone who wants to learn the basics of chemistry or the fundamentals of personal finance can now do so from the comfort of their own homes, entirely free of charge. As you know, poor education is the root cause of many problems that plague society. Issues like poverty and violence are fundamentally linked to a lack of proper education, and when we can make education widely available, then we can begin to eliminate some of those problems.
I thank you for the work that you are doing at Khan Academy, and I look forward to seeing new features and content in the years ahead.
