Target: Paul Kooistra, President of Erskine College
Goal: Lift ban on gay and bisexual people at Erskine College.
Gay and bisexual people are no longer welcome at South Carolina’s Erskine College because they are “living in sin,” according to a recent announcement from the college. Such a policy is shamelessly homophobic and discriminatory. Demand that the school rescind this ban.
After two students at the private Christian liberal arts college publicly came out as gay, the school administration opted to release a “Statement on Human Sexuality” to set their institution’s record straight. Citing “God’s intended design for humanity,” the statement delineated that any desire for or actual sex between members of the same sex is a sin and will not be tolerated on campus.
The college is not going to stop with this announcement, either—it also went on record saying that it will begin integrating this policy into its official documents, procedures, and “campus culture.” So, not only will the college no longer accept openly gay or bisexual students, it will create a blatantly hostile environment for any who may already be there.
This willful discrimination cannot be tolerated. Religion does not give any person or institution the right to treat others as less than human. Sign the petition below to demand that the college rescind its hateful ban.
Dear President Kooistra,
I am writing you today regarding your school’s recent announcement that it would no longer tolerate gay or bisexual students in its student body. No matter what line of reasoning you use to justify it, this is a shamelessly discriminatory and hopelessly outdated policy.
Someone’s religious beliefs do not give them free reign to treat any specific community of people as second-class citizens. It is very unfortunate that your college seems to think otherwise. You have refused to acknowledge the overwhelming body of psychological research that says that being gay or bisexual is completely natural, opting instead to favor what a text written thousands of years ago arbitrarily says.
This begs the question, does your college also approve of slavery? Does it approve of stoning wives to death for being unfaithful to their husbands? Does it approve of parents murdering rebellious children? If you are going to use the Bible as the basis of your policy-making, it seems only fitting to at least be consistent.
Your announcement makes no sense, discriminates against people for being who they are, and actively facilitates a destructive, harmful environment on your campus wherein students who are gay need to hide and be untrue to themselves just to live day-to-day. I demand that your school rescind this ban.
