Don’t Ban Homosexuality at College

Target: Paul Kooistra, President of Erskine College

Goal: Lift ban on gay and bisexual people at Erskine College.

Gay and bisexual people are no longer welcome at South Carolina’s Erskine College because they are “living in sin,” according to a recent announcement from the college. Such a policy is shamelessly homophobic and discriminatory. Demand that the school rescind this ban.

After two students at the private Christian liberal arts college publicly came out as gay, the school administration opted to release a “Statement on Human Sexuality” to set their institution’s record straight. Citing “God’s intended design for humanity,” the statement delineated that any desire for or actual sex between members of the same sex is a sin and will not be tolerated on campus.

The college is not going to stop with this announcement, either—it also went on record saying that it will begin integrating this policy into its official documents, procedures, and “campus culture.” So, not only will the college no longer accept openly gay or bisexual students, it will create a blatantly hostile environment for any who may already be there.

This willful discrimination cannot be tolerated. Religion does not give any person or institution the right to treat others as less than human. Sign the petition below to demand that the college rescind its hateful ban.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear President Kooistra,

I am writing you today regarding your school’s recent announcement that it would no longer tolerate gay or bisexual students in its student body. No matter what line of reasoning you use to justify it, this is a shamelessly discriminatory and hopelessly outdated policy.

Someone’s religious beliefs do not give them free reign to treat any specific community of people as second-class citizens. It is very unfortunate that your college seems to think otherwise. You have refused to acknowledge the overwhelming body of psychological research that says that being gay or bisexual is completely natural, opting instead to favor what a text written thousands of years ago arbitrarily says.

This begs the question, does your college also approve of slavery? Does it approve of stoning wives to death for being unfaithful to their husbands? Does it approve of parents murdering rebellious children? If you are going to use the Bible as the basis of your policy-making, it seems only fitting to at least be consistent.

Your announcement makes no sense, discriminates against people for being who they are, and actively facilitates a destructive, harmful environment on your campus wherein students who are gay need to hide and be untrue to themselves just to live day-to-day. I demand that your school rescind this ban.

Sincerely,

I want to sign because I support equal rights for the rainbow community, but I feel that by attacking their beliefs in your petition letter you will make them more entrenched. I believe that homophobia is incompatible with Christianity and I am puzzled and disappointed that a few hard-liners rate their homophobia above love and tolerance that Jesus stood for.

    Don’t you just hate bigots?

  3. These people who run a school are meant to be responsible and mature. Unfortunately they choose to be foul humans who shouldn’t be allowed near teenagers

  4. Caroline Johnson says:

I am very pro-gay rights, but I am also a Christian, and by insulting and attacking the beliefs of many Christians, you are not just criticizing their views on homosexuality, but their entire belief system. This is not helpful, will not encourage change, and is honestly a very limited and bigoted way of thinking. Many Christians support the gay community, and choose to love others above all else. This petition letter alienates many potential allies within the Christian community who would like to see their religion represented with the love Jesus espouses, rather than the fundamentalist sects of the religion. I would have signed this petition if it had not been so hateful.

  5. No LEGITIMATE college or university would support such a hateful, ignorant, prejudicial ban. Universities and colleges are suppose to be run by individuals who are highly educated (and not those who are still living in the Dark Ages). This is disgraceful !!! Anyone attending Erskine College (if we can actually call it a college)~ or any accredited, reputable college for that matter ~ should be ashamed to be a student there. HATE, PREJUDICE, IGNORANCE and BIGOTRY DO NOT BELONG ON ANY COLLEGE CAMPUS !!!!!!!!!!

  6. Catherine Alquier says:

sexual attirance is somethink private and ban should be illegal

  7. Gina Caracci says:

You hypocrites… GOD CREATED HUMANS IN HIS LIKENESS, DID HE NOT? YOU CANT PICK AND CHOOSE WHO YOU THINK THAT MEANS. MAN WROTE THE BIBLE FOR CONTROL.
PEOPLE ARE BORN GAY, ITS NOT A CHOICE LIKE A HAIR COLOR. GROW UP AND GET A GRIP.

  8. Think of what you are asking them to do. You are asking them to act in conflict with their own beliefs. They are not hurting anyone by adhering to the moral code of the religion they practice. They are not condoning the lynching of gays. According to Christianity, it is a sin. This is a private, Christian institution. They are free to establish rules within the confines of the law, and guess what, this act breaks no laws. No one is required to attend this university. It is a choice. Don’t like their code of conduct? Go elsewhere. You should never ask someone to violate their own beliefs. THAT is discrimination, ignorance, and intolerance.

    • Der – so in the bible in exodus is says to kill anyone who does ANY work on the sabbath.
