Prioritize Human Rights in Venezuela

Target: Nicolás Maduro Moros, President of Venezuela

Goal: Protect peaceful protesters against the use of unnecessary force and reaffirm Venezuela’s commitment to respecting and protecting human rights.

For over a year, Venezuela has been caught up in an increasingly violent whirlwind of both pro- and anti-government protests, the most recent of which resulted in the death of a fourteen-year-old boy. Sign the petition and urge Venezuelan authorities to denounce and address violent acts by security forces and reaffirm Venezuela’s commitment to protecting peaceful freedom of expression.

Kluiverth Roa Núñez was killed in the midst of a protest that was characterized by the use of violent and excessive force on the part of security forces. An officer is being charged with the boy’s death, but it is imperative that the authorities pursue justice for this boy and make redress to his family.

In the larger picture, the tragic death of Kluiverth Roa Núñez is part of a larger pattern of violence and excessive force used against protesters. There must be an unequivocal commitment from Venezuelan authorities to maintain order through nonviolent means whenever possible and to respect and protect the rights of nonviolent protesters.

Do not let the death of Kluiverth Roa Núñez be in vain. Sign the petition and demand an end to the violence in Venezuela.

Dear President,

I am writing to express my grief over the recent death of fourteen-year-old Kluiverth Roa Núñez, who was killed by a member of the security forces during an anti-government protest in San Cristóbal. His tragic death, however, is part of a larger and troubling pattern of violence against protesters. I urge you to reaffirm Venezuela’s commitment to respecting and protecting peaceful protest, and to make it clear that excessive violence and force is never acceptable.

Security forces are charged with keeping order and protecting citizens. Excessively violent actions are the very antithesis of what a security force is meant to do and be, and Venezuela must make it unequivocally clear that excessive force will not be tolerated. Security officers must be held to a higher standard.

Additionally, it is imperative that the people of Venezuela–both civilians and members of the security forces–understand that it is their universally-recognized and -guaranteed right to peacefully protest. Freedom of expression is a fundamental human right, and the government must reaffirm its understanding of this fact and its commitment to protecting it.

The violence sweeping Venezuela has gone on for far too long, and too many lives have already been lost. I urge you to make redress to the family of Kluiverth Roa Núñez, and I demand that steps be taken to prevent the loss of any other precious human lives.
