Target: Nguyễn Tấn Dững, Prime Minister of Vietnam
Goal: Make it illegal to keep bears at farms and give rescue group permission to place bears in credible sanctuaries.
In Vietnam, bears are being kept as pets by people who claim to no longer participate in the barbaric activity of bear bile extraction. Bears remain cramped up in small cages, and it is strongly suspected that farmers are illegally extracting bile from these animals. This horrific goal can be accomplished by puncturing a bear’s gallbladder with a needle in order to extract the bile. The process is constantly repeated throughout the day, and farmers profit from selling the bile they extract. As a result, bears suffer and die in pain as farmers continue to evade the law.
Although bear bile farms were outlawed in Vietnam in 2004, it is still legal for former farmers to keep bears as pets. Even worse, when farms were investigated, several bears were found to be in extremely poor health, which indicated that these bears were not being treated humanely. In fact, as many as 26 out of 49 bears died from things such as emaciation and malnourishment.
Unfortunately, these bear farms still operate despite the organization Animals Asia’s efforts to rescue the abused animals. The Vietnam government has ignored Animals Asia’s pleas to allow the group to save the bears for the purpose of placing them in credible rescue facilities.
Sign this petition and urge Prime Minister Dững and the Vietnam government to outlaw having bears as pets and to allow Animals Asia to immediately rescue the remaining bears still captive on bear farms. After everything these bears have been through, they deserve to live out the rest of their days in peace.
Dear Prime Minister Dững,
It is highly suspected that many people who claim to be former bear bile farmers are still illegally extracting bile from bears for profit. Because former farmers are allowed to keep bears they were once allowed to use for this purpose as pets, they still get away with performing this grotesque and inhumane activity. The bears continue to live in cages, and methods used to extract bile are extremely cruel. As each day passes, helpless bears die brutal and painful deaths.
Potential rescue workers discovered that the bears that remain on these farms are constantly sick. In fact, 26 out of 49 of those bears passed away. While it matters that bears are likely having their bile illegally extracted from them, what matters most is that bears are experiencing endless suffering while living on these farms. Furthermore, since extracting bear bile is illegal in Vietnam, there is no valid reason why anyone should be allowed to keep these bears.
For all of these reasons, I urge you to outlaw having bears as pets in Vietnam and to allow the organization Animals Asia to rescue the bears still remaining on these farms. No animal deserves to suffer at the hands of greedy humans.
