Keep Guns Off College Campuses

Target: Florida State Governor Rick Scott

Goal: Do not allow students to carry concealed weapons on college campuses.

Carrying concealed weapons onto college campuses could soon be made legal in the state of Florida. A recent surge of violence at colleges has brought an important issue to the forefront: the legality of concealed weapons on campus. At least ten U.S. states have introduced legislation to legalize concealed weapons as an answer to campus sexual assault and shootings.

Despite mass opposition, multiple states have already legalized concealed weapons and several others are in a position to follow suit. Urge Florida Governor Rick Scott to veto this dangerous proposal and keep our campuses from becoming more dangerous through the use of unnecessary firearms.

Campus shootings and sexual assault have become increasingly common, but the idea that students should carry weapons as resolution is absolutely insane. The legalization of concealed weapons on college campuses will only lead to more accidents. What may have been a minor argument now poses more risks when students are regularly carrying guns, especially in a college environment that already includes various degrees of inebriation.

The introduction of concealed weapons in a college environment is a Band-Aid solution that will quickly prove most ineffective. Sexual assault and gun violence are systemic issues, and the solution does not lie in the introduction of more weapons in an environment where rash behavior is common and emotions already run high.

Please sign this petition to urge Florida Governor Rick Scott to veto legislation that allows students to carry concealed weapons on college campuses, and vow to not further violence on college campuses.

Dear Governor Scott,

The introduction of concealed weapons on college campuses is not the appropriate response to existing violence and sexual assault. This can only increase violence and accidents and will not solve the deep-rooted issues present in our society. I urge you to not sign a bill that condones the presence of guns in a college environment.

Violence and sexual assault are far too common on college campuses everywhere, but the idea of guns as protection creates a false sense of security, all the while putting students in more danger than ever. Concealed weapons on campus are an unnecessary risk that students should not have to consider.

College environments are often full of substance abuse and emotions can run high, causing students to make unnecessary mistakes. Adding weapons to this mix is a sure way to create more fatalities and will do nothing to solve the much larger issue of sexual assault and campus shootings. Please do not sign a bill that allows students to carry concealed weapons, and vow to do everything in your power to ensure the safety of the public.
