Fire School Board Member for Bigoted Emails and Bullying

Target: Donald A. Ogilvie, Superintendent of the Buffalo Public Schools district

Goal: Fire school board member with a history of racism and sexism.

Buffalo Board of Education member Carl Paladino is refusing to step down after accusations of racism and sexism were leveled against him by black female members of the board. A person like this should not be allowed to have any influence over schools and education. Demand that Paladino be fired immediately.

This is not the first time Paladino has come under fire for his bigotry. During a campaign for governor of New York he ran several years ago, he reportedly sent or forwarded scores of emails to Buffalo-area politicians and media figures that contained racist and sexist material. These included, but were not limited to, clips of hardcore pornography, including a video of a woman having sex with a horse, an email titled “Obama Inauguration Rehearsal” that contained a video clip of African tribesman dancing in a village, and a photo of African men running away from a plane crash-landing on a dirt runway with the caption, “HOLY S***/ run n******, run!”

Following complaints about these emails, Paladino denied claims of racism, saying that to him “it was just humor.” That his clear racism and misogyny would color the way he interacts with the school board’s four black female members is not surprising.

Despite this history and the complaints he is currently receiving from his black colleagues, Paladino has the gall to say that they are just “playing the race card.” Sign the petition below to demand that the superintendent of the Buffalo Public Schools district fire Paladino from the school board immediately.

Dear Superintendent Ogilvie,

I am writing you today regarding Carl Paladino, a member of the Buffalo Public Schools Board of Education. Other members of the board have repeatedly complained about his bigoted behavior towards them, and yet he remains on the board. This is a issue that requires swift action on your part.

I would like to think that an unapologetically racist and sexist man would be disqualified from serving on Buffalo’s school board. Apparently, though, that is not the case. How is that being justified, I wonder? He has time and time again made other members of the board uncomfortable at best, and feel bullied at worst, on the basis of their gender and skin color. That should be more than enough reason to fire him. That this man has any say over the content and form of your district’s schools and educational materials is downright horrifying and only provides further grounds for his removal from the board.

How Paladino was allowed on the board at all after his email scandal a number of years ago boggles the mind, but now that it’s come to light that he has not changed at all, action must be taken. I demand that you fire Carl Paladino from the Buffalo Public Schools Board of Education at once.
