Praise Clothing Store for Raising Minimum Wage

Target: Carol Meyrowitz, Chief Executive of TJ Maxx

Goal: Praise TJ Maxx for raising the minimum wage for its employees.

Following the lead of Walmart, TJ Maxx stores in the United States will raise the minimum hourly wage to $9.00 and plan to increase this hourly wage to $10.00 in 2016. The decision was made after reviewing the company’s fourth-quarter earnings report, where it had a 15 percent rise in net profit from last year and a four percent increase in same-store sales. This decision will affect approximately 191,000 associates at 3,395 stores around the world.

Chief executive of TJ Maxx, Carol Meyrowitz, said in a statement, “This pay initiative is an important part of our strategies to continue attracting and retaining the best talent in order to deliver a great shopping experience for our customers, remain competitive on wages in our US markets, and stay focused on our value mission.”

Increasing the hourly minimum wage is a move that more highly successful companies should do and it is refreshing to see large name companies such as TJ Maxx and Walmart take this step. Employees are more likely to be happy and productive at places that offer a higher minimum wage. Please thank TJ Maxx for increasing the hourly minimum wage and helping to improve the lives of its employees.

Dear Chief Executive Carol Meyrowitz,

I would like to commend you and those who represent TJ Maxx for increasing the minimum hourly wage to $9.00. It is also nice to hear that you plan on increasing this number to $10.00 in 2016.

Caring for the well-being of your employees is a great way to increase employee-retention rates and provide better service overall. Many consumers want to shop at places that treat their employees well and TJ Maxx will greatly benefit from this move.

The disparity between rich and poor-income workers is a growing debate in the U.S. and many companies have been targeted for having too low wages. We need to help those struggling to pay for the cost of living and this hourly wage increase will help them do that. It would be fantastic to see TJ Maxx go even further in the coming years and continue to raise this wage so that employees will not have to worry about making a decent living.

Some companies take in a massive profit and don’t feel the need to reward hard-working employees for their role in this success. It is disheartening to these employees and the greed demonstrated by such companies is abhorrent. Thank you for not following these companies and helping workers strive for a better and happier life.
