Target: Bill O’Reilly, Fox News Host
Goal: Urge Fox News host to retract threats made against reporters and offer a formal apology.
Fox News anchor Bill O’Reilly recently threatened numerous reporters for saying that he may have lied about his experiences as a war correspondent. This controversy comes on the heels of another scandal in war reporting and O’Reilly is no doubt attempting to protect his credibility after what happened to NBC host Brian Williams. However, threatening reporters who are attempting to find the truth of a subject is rarely something that shows credibility. In fact, it only serves to make him look more guilty. No matter his reasoning, threatening reporters for attempting to find the truth is unacceptable and O’Reilly must apologize immediately.
The controversy begins with O’Reilly reporting on the Falklands war in Argentina. O’Reilly claims to have been in the middle of a war zone where people were being killed by government forces, but other reporters and video tapes of his location say otherwise. When this information was released, O’Reilly threatened those reporting on it, specifically one New York Times writer, saying “I am coming after you with everything I have. You can take that as a threat.” This is unacceptable behavior for anyone, let alone someone that claims to be a part of a news network that is fair and balanced.
These personal threats are not surprising after O’Reilly’s loud defamation of Williams for the same thing he is accused of doing. O’Reilly wants this news story to go away and he was willing to threaten people trying to find the truth just to do so. Whether or not the accusations are true, O’Reilly must be forced to withdraw these threats and apologize to those he has bullied. Please sign the petition below to ensure that O’Reilly apologizes for his remarks and allows the truth to come out.
Dear Mr. O’Reilly,
You recently took it upon yourself to threaten reporters trying to uncover the truth about your war reporting in Argentina during the Falklands conflict. Your accounts and those of your contemporaries differ quite a bit, and the video evidence you claimed would exonerate you failed to do so. I understand why you would not want a story like this to break, but threatening to come after someone with “all you have” only serves to make you sound more guilty. You cannot simply bully people into making this story disappear.
Your coverage of the Brian Williams scandal was very harsh for one accused of doing the same thing. The truth will always come out, Mr. O’Reilly, and nothing you do can change that fact. It’s for all of these reasons that I demand you retract your threats and offer all of those trying to find the truth a full, public apology. This kind of behavior is not acceptable, especially not for someone who claims to have as much moral fiber as yourself. Please make the right decision and embrace the truth regardless of what that may be.
