End Epidemic Veteran Unemployment and Poverty

Target: Michigan Senate Member Vincent Gregory

Goal: Support tax credits for hiring unemployed veterans.

A Michigan lawmaker is trying to curb veteran unemployment by giving tax credits to companies who employ them. The Hire MI Heroes Act would give a one-time tax credit to employers who hire veterans. Vincent Gregory, a veteran himself, is one of the lead sponsors of this bill that has yet to be introduced as legislation, but already has several supporters.

Michigan has one of the highest rates of veterans and far too many of those individuals are unemployed. The transition back to civilian life proves difficult for many reasons, not the least of which is the struggle to find employment.  Support Vincent Gregory and the state of Michigan in their attempt to lower veteran unemployment rates.

For veterans, the reintegration into society is difficult in almost every way. One of the most important solaces can often come from stability, but without adequate employment, this is almost impossible to achieve. Little is done to make the transition from military life to civilian life one of ease. The two are vastly different, and many employers would rather hire an individual with job experience they deem relevant. A general lack of understanding regarding military life contributes to an employer’s quick decision to disregard a veteran’s experience as useful.

With this in mind, it seems necessary to provide incentive to employers in an attempt to demonstrate the importance of hiring veterans and the specific qualities they may possess. This is the aim of the Hire MI Heroes Act. An increase in employers hiring veterans will result in the decline of a stigma that haunts veterans as being unemployable and can serve as a springboard for other states to introduce similar legislation. Sign this petition to demonstrate support for legislation to lower veteran unemployment rates.

Dear Senator Gregory,

The upcoming proposal of legislation designed to lower the veteran unemployment rate by increasing incentive for employers to hire such individuals is an excellent idea. The current rate of unemployed veterans in the state of Michigan and also across the country is unacceptable. The Hire MI Heroes Act plays an important role in changing the lives of so many. Thank you for your commitment to bettering the lives of so many brave veterans.

Should this legislation pass, the results will be widespread. Employers will be pleased with their tax credit and the resulting efforts of their most recent employees, and veterans will have completed an important process in their reintegration into society. This truly is an effort that will benefit the lives of everyone involved. I support your efforts to lower the veteran unemployment rate and hope you continue to advocate on behalf of veterans everywhere.
