Don’t Force Migrant Workers to Remain with Abusive Employers

Target: Prime Minister of the United Kingdom David Cameron

Goal: Allow migrant workers to leave abusive employers without being punished.

In April 2012, the United Kingdom introduced a controversial bill meant to stop the flow of immigrants into the country. Since its passage, the bill has sparked debate and outrage within the human rights community as it’s led to repeated abuse of migrant workers. Called modern slavery, migrant workers who wish to change employers could become undocumented, thereby losing their benefits. This bill is doing more harm than good and Prime Minister David Cameron needs to realize this. Sign this petition and amend this bill so migrant workers are allowed to change employers.

The bill has been called the Modern Slavery bill because of the rampant amount of abuse. Researchers from Human Rights Watch and Kalayaan found a spike in abuse when the bill was passed. Migrant workers became more susceptible to human trafficking, exploitation, and other abuses thanks to this bill. The researchers also documented workers whose passports were seized by authorities, who were detained by their employers, and were suffering from long work hours with no breaks.

There is concern that there are not enough protections for migrant workers. Those who cannot stand the abuse faced by their employers will often seek work under the table, which further violates the nation’s laws. Migrant workers are under a lot of pressure to make sure that they not only make enough money for themselves, but for their families back home. If such laws applied to a United Kingdom citizen there would be uproar. Sign this petition and demand Prime Minister David Cameron to end modern slavery.

Dear Prime Minister David Cameron,

I am writing this letter urging you to change a dire situation. Migrant workers in the United Kingdom are being abused because of a law many are calling the Modern Slavery bill. This legislation makes it illegal for a migrant worker to change employers, and doing so makes them lose their documentation. If such a law existed for citizens in the United Kingdom, there would be outrage, and yet this monstrosity of a law was passed.

Migrant workers should be treated with dignity and respect, not as beings who are disposable. This law has led to the exploitation and abuse of workers, and current safeguards are not keeping them secure. I urge you and Parliament to remove this law immediately, as no person should be forced to stay with an abusive employer.

The modern United Kingdom was once a humane society. Every human on earth should have the same human rights as enjoyed by a British citizen
