Stop Killing Pigeons for Entertainment

Target: Law Enforcement Chief of the Oklahoma Wildlife Department Robert Fleenor

Goal: Hold James Inofe accountable for killing tame pigeons as part of a fundraising event.

U.S. Senator Jim Inhofe held a fundraising event with an activity that involved shooting hundreds of live pigeons at a state park in Oklahoma. Participants only had to pay a fee in order to take part in this cruel slaughter of pigeons, all of which were tame and banded, with the Senator.

The animal rights group called Showing Animals Respect and Kindness (SHARK) was able to film the entire incident, which showed numerous injured birds bleeding and limping across the shooting grounds. Additionally, several guests at the fundraiser were captured on camera kicking the wounded birds on the ground. The wounded birds were then left behind in the field to die slow, agonizing deaths.

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) says that the fundraising event was inhumane and a violation of animal cruelty laws because Oklahoma does not even have laws that allow live pigeon shooting. As the home state of the American Pigeon Racing Union and the American Pigeon Museum, Inhofe’s event tarnishes the state’s positive record of treatment toward pigeons and other species of birds.

Senator Inhofe’s campaign manager, Rusty Appleton, claimed that the birds would be given to homeless people, but this was a lie, because homeless shelters are only allowed to serve meat that has been certified by the USDA. Please sign this petition to demand that Senator Jim Inhofe be held accountable for killing pigeons for entertainment at his fundraising event.

Dear Robert Fleenor,

Senator Jim Inhofe held a fundraising event in Oklahoma where guests could pay money to ruthlessly shoot live, tame pigeons. Hundreds of pigeons, which had been gathered from an unknown contractor, were hand-tossed into the air for the Senator and guests to use as target practice. The birds either died instantly or were left bleeding and limping across the killing fields. Video footage from animal rights group Showing Animals Respect and Kindness (SHARK) documented the entire event, which also showed several guests kicking the wounded birds on the ground.

The Senator’s campaign manager has made excuses to justify this cruel slaughter but this is a clear case of animal cruelty. Oklahoma does not have laws that allow live pigeon shoots, and even if they did, a fundraiser should be advocating altruism, not a vile event that promotes animal torture.

  1. Find some other way to make money than murdering innocent animals. This is animal cruelty. This is sick and twisted.

  2. senseless, arrogance!

  3. Arlene Steinberg says:

It is bad enough when ordinary, classless human garbage does vicious and eviul stuff like this, but when an ELECTED OFFICIAL does it, promotes it and supports it, it is time to kick that piece of shit out of office.
Citizens of Oklahoma – please start regular protests outside this creep’s office.
Boycott the business of every person who participated in this travesty. Protest outside their businesses too.
And DO NOT SUPPORT ANY so-called charity that gets funds by perpetrating obscene animal cruelty like this. There is no good that should EVER be supported by evil.
Kind of like a murderer who donates the organs of his victim to a transplant lab. Charity? Hardly.

  4. Why don’t we just go back to gladiatorial battles to the death and be done with it. There seems to be a large segment of the population that enjoys blood sports, and seeing living beings – animal or human – shot, beaten, or tortured to death.

Sarcasm aside, what the hell is wrong with some people. Killing things is not entertaining to a whole lot of us. Very sick.
