Target: David Cameron, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom
Goal: Praise significant reduction in harmful greenhouse gas emissions and increased development of renewable energy capabilities.
The United Kingdom has reduced fossil fuel use by over one-fifth in the past decade, raising its use of wind energy to compensate. It has also reduced coal use and greenhouse gas emissions, according to a recent report by the country’s Office for National Statistics. In 2013, 15 percent of the country’s energy came from renewable sources, such as the sun and the wind. This means that the country is well on track to meeting its 2020 goal of sourcing 30 percent of its total energy from renewable supplies.
Fossil fuels such as coal, gas, and crude oil are the most relied on sources of energy on the planet, but produce greenhouse gas emissions when burned. These gases trap heat within the earth’s atmosphere in what is called a greenhouse effect, which results in global warming, a phenomenon that poses a direct threat to the health and livelihoods of billions of people.
Global warming is already effecting the earth, causing a rise in sea level and a change in ocean ecosystems. Hazardous heat waves and wildfires are becoming more common while snow and ice cover recede in other parts of the world. If left unchecked, global warming could cause mass extinctions of entire species or massive flooding of major coastal cities.
Not only will the progress benefit the United Kingdom, but the oceans and the environment as a whole. The United Kingdom is setting a successful model for other countries to follow in order to reduce their impact on the environment. Sign the petition below to applaud the United Kingdom’s accomplishments in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and urge the country to keep up its efforts.
Dear Prime Minister David Cameron,
A recent report released by the Office for National Statistics shows a one-fifth decrease in the use of fossil fuels as well as an increase in the use of renewable energy. The report shows that the UK is well on track to meeting its 2020 sustainable energy goal of using 30 percent renewable energy.
Global warming is a worldwide threat, and its effects are already apparent in changes in weather patterns, a rise in sea levels, and changes to ocean ecosystems. This success not only benefits the United Kingdom, but the entire global environment. We, the undersigned, applaud your success in reducing the use of gas and coal, and encourage you to continue striving toward your goals.
