Target: John Kasich, Governor of Ohio
Goal: Protest efforts to impose the country’s strictest abortion laws by banning abortion after six seeks gestation.
A bill seeking to outlaw abortion after six weeks has been introduced to the Ohio legislature. The proposition, dubbed the “heartbeat bill” would make abortions illegal after a fetal heartbeat can be detected, which generally occurs at six weeks’ gestation. Any physician that breaches the law could be charged with a fifth-degree felony and sentenced to 12 months in prison and a $2,500 fine. The bill makes exceptions only for pregnant women who are at risk of serious health problems or death if their pregnancy continues.
If this bill is passed into law, Ohio would become the most restrictive state in the country for abortion availability. This could force some women to travel out-of-state for their procedures, and could even cause a resurgence in home-administered pregnancy terminations. As seen in Idaho after a ban on post-20-week abortions, the law could cause the closure of several of the state’s abortion clinics, making care even less accessible for those that meet the state’s strict criteria.
Several studies have shown that restricting abortion leads to a rise in “back-alley” procedures, performed by improperly trained staff in unsavory and unclean environments. Misoprostol, a drug that induces miscarriage, is being sold increasingly in Texas flea markets after excessively restrictive abortion standards caused the closure of nearly all of the state’s clinics. Self-induced and unsafe abortions carry many health risks, and can even result in death.
The proposed law is not only a ridiculous infringement on the reproductive rights of women, but is likely to actually put them in danger. As most abortions are performed around the eight-week point, the law would affect the majority of women seeking the procedure. Sign the petition below to show your opposition for this unnecessarily restrictive and baseless bill.
Dear Governor John Kasich,
A bill introduced to the Ohio legislature seeks to ban abortion after a fetal heartbeat can be detected, generally after six weeks. If successful, the bill would make pregnancy terminations inaccessible to the majority of women that seek them, increasing the prevalence of self-administered and unsafe abortion.
This bill, which would be the most restrictive in the country if passed, poses an immediate danger to the reproductive rights and physical health of many women. We, the undersigned, denounce this ridiculous proposition and ask you to veto it, should it pass the legislature.
