Target: New Jersey Superior Court Judge Peter F. Bariso Jr.
Goal: Praise the ruling that classifies gay-to-straight conversion therapy as a fraudulent act.
A New Jersey judge ruled that people who provide gay-to-straight conversion therapy are committing fraud if they state that homosexuality is a mental disorder that can be cured.
In Hudson County, New Jersey, Superior Court Judge Peter F. Bariso Jr. ruled in favor of the plaintiffs that sued Jews Offering New Alternatives for Healing, or JONAH, a Jersey City organization that promotes conversion therapy. They claimed that JONAH was in violation of the New Jersey Consumer Fraud Act by promoting their therapy as a way to “cure” homosexuality. The plaintiffs also claimed that they were forced to engage in emotionally traumatic behavior such as having to strip completely naked and beat images of their mothers.
Bariso said that,”it is a misrepresentation in violation of the Consumer Fraud Act, in advertising or selling conversion therapy services to describe homosexuality, not as being a normal variation of human sexuality, but as being a mental illness, disease (or) disorder.”
The conversion therapy industry makes a lot of money by telling people that homosexuality is a mental disorder that can be cured and this will no doubt be a huge blow to the industry. Telling people their sexuality is a mental disorder is wrong and this judge made the right decision by ruling that these conversion therapy institutions are committing fraud.
JONAH’s therapists are not even licensed and are often members of the clergy and have no right telling people that their sexuality is a mental disorder that can be cured. Please sign the petition below and praise Judge Bariso for his progressive ruling.
Dear Judge Bariso,
I would like to thank you for your ruling that makes people providing gay-to-straight conversion therapy a fraudulent offense. Homosexuality is not a disorder and not something that needs to be “cured.” Your progressive stance greatly helps the LGBTQ community and everyone who believes in equality.
Institutions such as JONAH are not only advertising something that has no basis in fact, but also shaming individuals for their sexual orientation. We do not need unlicensed therapists indoctrinating people with the idea that their sexual preferences are something that needs to be cured.
Thank you for examining the scientific evidence that concludes that homosexuality is not a mental disorder and stopping institutions like JONAH from making false claims.
