Target: Exxon Mobil CEO Rex W. Tillerson
Goal: Improve conditions at oil refineries in wake of massive explosion that injured workers.
A massive explosion rocked a California oil refinery, injuring three workers and ripping apart huge metal structures. This happened during a nationwide series of oil worker strikes protesting unsafe conditions and poor training programs. These workers have been complaining of leaks and explosions that put their lives at significant risk. It’s incredibly fortunate that no one was killed in California’s explosion, which was so large that people felt it in their homes miles away.
Oil companies like Exxon Mobil make billions of dollars every year, and enjoy subsidies of billions more from the U.S. government. It’s bad enough that they pose a constant risk to the ecosystem that they ship the oil through, as has been demonstrated by the frequent spills, leaks, and train wrecks that have been happening lately. The least they could do is use some of their massive profits to create reasonably safe conditions for their workers.
Sign this petition to demand that Exxon Mobil give in to the reasonable demands of their workers and implement better safety standards and training programs to protect employees from death by explosion.
Dear Mr. Tillerson,
A recent explosion at one of your oil refineries in California has demonstrated the extreme risks your employees take just by working for you. There have been numerous accidents in the last few years that have led oil refinery workers to hold strikes across the U.S. The massive explosion that injured three in California proves that their complaints are more than valid.
I’m aware that Exxon Mobil makes an incredible amount of money each year while also receiving subsidies from the U.S. government. There is absolutely no reason why you shouldn’t be able to dip into some of your obscene profits to implement better safety standards and better train your employees so that accidents like this can be prevented.
It’s only through sheer luck that there were only three injuries and no deaths in this explosion, as it was big enough to kill many people. If you don’t give in to the very reasonable demands of your workers, you may soon find yourself with blood on your hands. I urge you to provide your employees with safer conditions as soon as possible.
