Target: FBI Director James B. Comey
Goal: Investigate allegations of the deliberate destruction of grand jury testimony regarding the nation’s most recent mass lynching event.
Important documents in the investigation of the United States’ most recent mass lynching event have been purposefully destroyed in an effort to protect those responsible from justice, according to civil rights activists. Such allegations, if true, would constitute one of the largest injustices in modern American history. Demand that the FBI launch an investigation into these charges.
The Moore’s Ford Bridge lynching was a 1946 massacre that left four black Georgians dead at the hands of a white mob. While no one was charged with the murders in the years after the event, the case has come under renewed scrutiny after the FBI received a tip that some perpetrators may still be alive.
In the wake of these new efforts, government representatives have announced that no records of the grand jury convened to identify the members of the mob exist, and were apparently lost or destroyed in the years immediately following the trial. Suspicions that there was a cover-up to protect the murderers by members of Georgia’s openly white supremacist government at the time have always existed, but this revelation has given them new vigor.
As the FBI continues to look into the new leads it has been provided, it must also investigate the possibility that the grand jury transcripts were intentionally destroyed by government officials to protect the identities of the murders, and hold them likewise accountable. Sign the petition below to demand that the FBI launch a full investigation into the possible deliberate destruction of all grand jury testimony transcripts related to the case.
Dear Director Comey,
I am writing you today regarding the revelation presented by the Department of Justice that no transcripts of the grand jury proceedings for the Moore’s Ford Bridge lynchings are known to exist. Given the history of this case, this is extremely suspicious and must be looked into.
As you know, this case is steeped in controversy and represents the very worst of American history. In a time of open and accepted racism, that there may have been a conspiracy to protect the perpetrators of racist murders from justice is not out of the realm of possibility. Because of that, it was good news to hear that your agency had received and been following up on tips that some perpetrators are still alive and could be yet brought to justice. With the destruction or loss of the grand jury testimony coming to light, however, it seems necessary to also investigate that angle—just as the murderers should be known and punished, those who protected them should be known and punished in turn.
Justice has been much too long coming for George and Mae Dorsey and Roger and Dorothy Malcolm. I urge you to launch a full FBI investigation into the possible intentional destruction of the grand jury records and and the government cover-up it suggests, in an effort to bring everyone involved in this horrible massacre to justice.
