Target: President Barack Obama
Goal: Begin keeping records of civilians killed in airstrikes against ISIS.
The number of innocent civilians who are being killed or injured in airstrikes targeting ISIS is not being kept track of by the military, leading to the preposterous claim that “no civilian casualties” have taken place. This is a blatant lie that is contrary to independent accounts from on the ground. Demand that the Pentagon begin tracking and acknowledging the number of non-combatants killed in airstrikes against ISIS.
Lieutenant-General James L. Terry, the person in charge of American forces in Iraq and Syria, recently admitted in a press conference that he has no idea how many civilians have been killed by American airstrikes against ISIS because the Pentagon is not actually keeping records of the numbers. This is an outrageous revelation that shows an utter lack of respect for the people these airstrikes are supposed to be protecting.
Not only that, but every time an innocent civilian is killed by American airstrikes and not acknowledged, the more likely it is that others will flock to join ISIS. These are lessons that one would have hoped we learned in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, but apparently that is too much to ask.
There is not a single legitimate reason to not document civilian deaths caused by US airstrikes. Sign the petition below to demand that the Pentagon begin to keep track of the number of civilians killed in our airstrikes against ISIS.
Dear President Obama,
I am writing you today regarding our country’s ongoing efforts to erode ISIS. Unfortunately, and all too predictably, it has been revealed that those efforts have been in some cases less than honorable.
Specifically, the Pentagon has recently admitted that it is not actually keeping track of the civilian casualties caused by our airstrikes against ISIS. This is, frankly, despicable. Not documenting innocent lives lost by our airstrikes communicates to the world that we see these people as less-than, as disposable, as not worth our effort even as they die in military attacks that are supposed to help protect them. It communicates that we don’t care about them because they aren’t worth being cared about.
Well, I don’t think that’s right. We as a nation need to own up to these deaths and do what we can to keep any more from happening. I demand that you order the Pentagon to begin keeping track of the number of innocent Iraqis and Syrians who are killed in our airstrikes against ISIS.
