Demand Hate Crime Charges for Racist Students

Target: Ken Paxton, Texas Attorney General

Goal: Demand Students face criminal hate crime charges for “white power” sign.

Students intentionally held up signs that read “white power” during a high school basketball game against a predominantly black team. This was a clear attempt by some ignorant students to threaten people of other races and make themselves feel powerful. They were not just some ignorant kids trying to get a laugh, either. There were reports that they also shouted racial slurs at players on the opposing team after one player was injured.

These students clearly harbor racist sentiments and their actions, whether done in jest or in earnestness, require consequences. They must be forced to stand trial as criminals and answer for the hate crimes they have committed.

Texas is not a state known for its accepting nature or history of cooperative racial relations. That being said, seeing something like this in the modern era is still truly shocking. This shock reveals something important to us as a society, however. Regardless of the face that many people put on when they are in public, deep racial divides still separate this country, and they will continue to do so until people become more comfortable talking about race. The fact that these children thought that it would be funny to hold up a sign like this, even as a joke, illustrates that there are deep-seated racist feelings left in people that they are passing down to their children.

These children must be held responsible for their actions. There is a strong chance that they themselves didn’t even know why they were doing this, but the fact remains that they held up signs with the slogan of the most notorious hate group in U.S. history. Something must be done to teach them, and any other people that think this kind of behavior is still acceptable, a lesson. Please sign below to demand that these students be forced to bear the consequences of their actions.

Dear Mr. Paxton,

It has come to my attention that some students in your home state of Texas were photographed holding up signs that read “white power” during a high school basketball game. While I’m sure I don’t have to remind you, this was one of the slogans of the most notorious hate group in U.S. history. This is unacceptable behavior for anyone and these students must be made to face the full consequences of the hate crime that they perpetrated.

These were not some students just trying to get a laugh. They also yelled racial slurs at some of the opposing players during the game. These students harbor some real and deep-seated racist sentiments. They may not even be aware of them, as these feelings are generally passed down by parents, but they must be punished nonetheless.

Even if these students were just trying to get a laugh, the fact that they found this funny in the slightest is evidence that they need to be taught why that slogan is threatening and unacceptable. Please make the right decision and bring criminal charges against these young people immediately.
