Stop Secrecy in Animal Testing

Target: Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker

Goal: Oppose secrecy at a university animal testing facility.

Governor Scott Walker of Wisconsin has been in the news recently for a proposed huge budget cut for the University of Wisconsin (UW). However, within legislation aimed at UW there exists another proposal that should be made public, and promptly shot down. Walker is attempting to give the animal testing facility at UW the ability to be legally secretive about their testing procedures on animals. If this tidbit is allowed to pass, UW will be made exempt from Wisconsin’s open records law. Secrecy in animal testing procedures should never be allowed.

UW’s animal researchers, like many who abuse animals in the name of research, have been scrutinized for their practices numerous times. Animal research laboratory workers at UW have been yearning for secrecy for a long time. This is not only very suspicious, it is very dangerous and wrong. If a blanket exemption is given to UW, there is no way of knowing if the animals in the facility are being abused beyond justification, and there will likely be less consideration for animal well-being in the building due to a lack of accountability.

The university operates on public money; the public deserves, in the very least, to know what happens within the school’s animal testing facility. This exemption should not be allowed to pass. Animal research should be 100 percent transparent to ensure that the animals are having basic needs met, and are not being subjected to constant torture. Sign this petition to shoot this exemption proposal down.

Dear Governor Walker,

In the past, the University of Wisconsin has asked for an open-records exemption. This request has taken place three times, and the most recent is the reason that you have listed the exemption deep within your newly proposed budget. I am writing to adamantly oppose secrecy in publicly-funded animal testing facilities.

If UW is granted this exemption, the animals of the facility will likely suffer. I understand that the research facility has faced scrutiny in the past for its treatment of animals. Because of this track record, asking for an open-records exemption is very suspicious. The animals at the facility deserve protection from abuse. If the school’s facility is allowed to operate in secrecy, the public will have a very difficult time keeping the animals safe. Not to mention, the university operates on public money; the people have a right to knowledge about the operation.

Governor Walker, I urge you to discontinue attempts to grant the University of Wisconsin a public-records exemption. The public deserves to know what happens to the animals at the testing facility, and the facility must be held accountable for its actions.
