Ban Use of Harmful Flavoring Chemical

Target: Margaret Hamburg, Commissioner of the FDA and David Michaels, Secretary of OSHA

Goal: Ban the use of diacetyl in e-cigarettes and food production.

Workers at food flavoring plants and smokers of e-cigarettes are inhaling deadly amounts of a chemical called diacetyl, which is used as a flavoring agent and has been found to cause a deadly breakdown of the respiratory system when inhaled over prolonged periods. This is happening because major regulatory bodies that are supposed to protect the public from harmful chemicals have few to no regulations about the use of diacetyl. This harmful chemical must be banned from use in food production and smoking products to protect people from the horrible illness that it causes.

Diacetyl is said to have a delicious buttery taste and when ingested there are no harmful side effects. However, workers in plants that produce foods coated in the chemical are forced to inhale it for prolonged periods daily. These workers are unprotected by regulations and have no idea of the danger that they face on a daily basis.

The chemical is also used to flavor the liquid that new e-cigarettes use to create vapor for their products. People that smoke these are at an even higher risk as they are forcefully inhaling dangerous amounts of diacetyl which literally attacks the lungs and respiratory system. When tested for the chemical, more than 75 percent of the brands of the liquid contained it. Even worse is the fact that some brands that claim to not have the chemical in them are lying.

Something must be done about the use of this harmful substance. Regulatory bodies have been petitioned by doctors and respiratory societies numerous times for regulations to be put in place to no avail. It is time that these organizations do their jobs and ban the use of this chemical outright in order to protect those who are unaware of the dangers. Please sign to save these people from a lifetime of respiratory illness.

Dear Mr. Michaels and Ms. Hamburg,

It has come to my attention that the chemical diacetyl is being widely used to flavor products all across the United States. While I understand that ingestion of the chemical is not very harmful, I know that inhalation of it can be deadly. For this reason I am writing to demand that you ban the use of this chemical in order to protect workers that are forced to inhale it and people that smoke e-cigarettes who are unaware of the dangers.

It is well proven that diacetyl causes the respiratory illness bronchiolitis obliterans which literally destroys the lungs and respiratory system. With the rising popularity of e-cigarettes and the growing demand for cheese-flavored potato chips, the number of people that contract this horrible illness will only continue to grow.

I beg that you ban this chemical from use in flavoring products immediately. Do people need chocolate flavored vapor so badly that they are willing to die for it? How about butterscotch coffee? Please make the decision that you know is right and save thousands, if not millions, of lives.
