Get Plastics Out of the Earth’s Oceans

Target: President Barack Obama

Goal: Remove millions of tons of plastic from the world’s oceans.

Eight million tons of plastic garbage makes its way into the planet’s oceans every single year, according to a recently published international study. This is a huge environmental risk and causes the deaths of countless marine animals. Demand that President Obama launch an international effort to reduce this rate of pollution and remove the plastic waste that is already in the oceans.

This is the first international study of its kind to look at the rate at which the world’s countries are polluting the oceans with plastic. Its findings are not optimistic. The estimate of eight million tons of plastic waste a year is vastly conservative because the researchers did not take into account plastics that make their to the oceans from landlocked countries via rivers and other waterways. At our current rate, by 2025 we will be dumping enough plastics into the oceans to cover 5 percent of the world’s surface in plastic per year. This spells disaster for millions of sea creatures, and by extension, disaster for all of us.

These numbers are incredibly sobering and demand immediate action. Sign the petition below to demand that President Obama lead an international effort to reduce the global rate of plastic pollution and remove the plastics that are already in the oceans.

Dear President Obama,

I am writing you today regarding the status of our world’s oceans. An international study recently published in Science brought to light just how severe the problem of ocean pollution, particularly with plastics, actually is. We can’t afford to stand idle about this. Something must be done.

Plastic in the world’s oceans means that the chemicals in plastic get into the food chain. Not only does that present a very real, immediate threat to the animals living in the oceans, it means that eventually, those chemicals will be consumed by us. And given the amount of plastic that we are pouring into the oceans, this is a very real threat—at least eight million tons are dumped into the seas every year, and that number is steadily increasing. This is both an environmental issue and a public health issue, and one made all the more dire by the effects of climate change.

The peoples of the world have a responsibility to protect our oceans. As it stands, though, we are failing miserably, and putting animals and humans alike at risk. I demand that you launch an international effort to reduce the amount of plastics that gets dumped into oceans each year and to remove as many plastics that are already in the oceans as we can.

  1. We have no shame or respect for our planet.
The younger generation should change that.
