Target: Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson
Goal: Don’t legalize discrimination against LGBT people.
Arkansas lawmakers just passed a bill that will make it illegal for cities or counties in the state to create ordinances to protect LGBT people from discrimination. Bill SB202 makes it impossible for local government to create anti-discrimination ordinances to protect LGBT people, effectively creating a second class of citizens without civil rights. If a company decides to fire someone for being gay, local government cannot do anything about it now.
This bill comes from a place of pure hate: senators who supported the bill have admitted that it exists simply to prevent LGBT people from having the same rights as other Arkansas citizens. It’s no coincidence that a “religious freedom” bill was introduced at the same time, to prevent the government from interfering with someone’s religious beliefs, no matter how damaging those beliefs are to anyone else.
Arkansas lawmakers are working hard to make their state a homophobic wasteland, and Governor Asa Hutchinson is just enough of a coward to let them. He claims he’s worried about losing local control, but wants to prevent “burdensome” limits on business, so he won’t sign or veto the bill. But actions speak louder than words, and it’s obvious that he simply doesn’t care about LGBT people, or the good of the state of Arkansas.
By signing this petition, you’ll be telling Governor Hutchinson that this cowardice in the face of hate and discrimination will not stand, and that he needs to step up and do what’s right for the people he was elected to serve.
Dear Governor Asa Hutchinson,
I am appalled that lawmakers in Arkansas would pen a bill to prevent local government from taking steps to protect LGBT people. I am appalled that you would be such a coward as to refuse to veto that bill. LGBT people are citizens just like you, except that thanks to lawmakers and politicians like you, they have to face a constant struggle to have the same basic rights as anyone else.
SB202 is a disgrace, it comes from a place of pure hatred that and it hurts the people of Arkansas. This bill will not help business, and it certainly won’t attract business to your state. All it does is violate the civil rights of hardworking people, and give bigots the chance to ruin other people’s lives. It is a bald-faced attempt to allow the outdated beliefs of some to ruin the lives of others, and it can’t be tolerated.
I am urging you to veto this bill, or to take steps to prevent its implementation. You were elected to lead Arkansas, not ruin it.
