Target: Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto
Goal: End cockfighting in Mexico.
Cockfighting is still practiced in Mexico, despite the fact that it is a depraved and bloody sport. Many countries, including the United States, have banned this abhorrent practice. In cockfighting, two roosters are placed in an arena to fight to the death, and spectators place bets on which will win the fight. Sometimes metal spurs are attached to their legs so that they can inflict maximum damage on each other.
According to the Humane Society of the United States, birds suffer terrible injuries in these fights, such as pierced eyes and punctured lungs. In fact, the blades attached to their legs are so dangerous that they have been known to kill the cockfighters themselves when their bird accidentally slashes them. There is no escape for the rooster; his only choice is to fight.
The Humane Society also reports that cockfighting often goes hand in hand with other crimes, such as the selling of illegal guns, drug dealing, and even murder. This is not surprising since people bring massive amounts of cash to these events to gamble, which leads to arguments and shady dealings. Crime is already an issue in Mexico, and it’s conceivable that Mexican authorities could cut down on crime by outlawing these violent sporting events.
Proponents of cockfighting argue that it is a part of the cultural heritage of many countries, but why should this make it morally acceptable? There were many vile practices that were once deeply ingrained into culture, such as slavery and gladiatorial combat. Urge Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto to consider using his influence to end cockfighting in Mexico, by signing the petition below.
Dear President Enrique Peña Nieto,
I was shocked to discover that cockfighting is still legal in Mexico. As you know, cockfighting is the practice of placing two roosters in an arena and watching them battle to the death. Sometimes metal spurs are attached to their legs to maximize the trauma that they inflict on each other. This practice is so barbaric that it has been made illegal in many countries.
Not only is it a terribly cruel practice which inflicts great injury on the roosters, but the Humane Society of the United States reports that crime often takes place at cockfighting events. Since people bring large amounts of cash to gamble, this can lead to violent disputes, facilitate the exchange of illegal goods, and it can even lead to murder. I feel that outlawing cockfighting in Mexico could potentially lead to a reduction in crime. I ask that you use your influence to prevent cockfighting from taking place in Mexico.
