Provide Greater Protection for African Elephants

Target: Fish and Wildlife Director Daniel Ashe

Goal: Protect the African elephant by classifying it as an endangered species.

African elephants are often the target of poachers, captured and slaughtered for their ivory tusks. While African elephants have been listed as a threatened species since the late 1970s, they have yet to be listed as endangered and in consequence have not been given the protection they need.

Elephant populations in Africa have declined by as much as 60 percent and continue to fall, as almost 100 elephants are murdered by poachers each day. While no blood is shed in America, our country still plays an integral part as the U.S. has the second largest market for illegal ivory.

With Americans buying illegal ivory carvings, it maintains the demand for more ivory tusks and puts more elephants in danger. These animals are already threatened but are still relentlessly hunted to be exploited and profited off of. They deserve more protection and respect from our country.

African elephants need to be listed and protected under the Endangered Species Act. Doing so will ensure an effective ban on ivory products and decrease the demand, helping to end the senseless killings of these precious creatures. More must be done to ensure these illegal ivory products are kept out of the U.S. and out of the hands of Americans so that no more African elephants need to be persecuted.

By signing this petition below, you will be asking that African elephants are labeled as an endangered species so that they may receive more protection and ivory imports will be more closely regulated.

Dear Director Ashe,

African elephants are hunted and killed everyday by poachers. They are targeted for their ivory tusks, which are then sold on the black market illegally to buyers across the world. The demand for this illegal commodity helps to maintain the poaching business, and poachers continue to relentlessly hunt and kill elephants.

The United States is one of the top buyers of illegal ivory. With America helping to maintain this cruel, heartless business, there could be no end for elephant poaching until the African elephant is extinct.

It is time that the African elephant receives more protection. I urge you to list the African elephant under the Endangered Species Act so that it receives more protection. By doing so, there will be harsher regulations and punishments for ivory trade, which could help lower the demand for ivory tusks and hopefully put a stop to this cruel poaching. This majestic creature deserves America’s protection — please act now.
