Target: Bertrand C. Sellier, mayor of Pelham Manor, New York
Goal: Fire chief of police who made racist comments about people of color.
Alfred Mosiello, a police chief for Pelham Manor, New York who sent a number of emails containing racist comments and jokes about people of color, is back on the job after only having to serve a brief suspension for punishment. Mosiello has demonstrated that he is biased against African Americans and other people of color and cannot be trusted to fulfill his duties with integrity. Demand that the city fire him immediately.
In these emails, Mosiello echoed a number of, unfortunately, all-too-common racist stereotypes. He said that African American women have a lot of children so that they can collect welfare checks, complained about how Hispanic people are lucky because they can keep their income off-the-book, and joked about how African Americans have no desire to actually work and get caught up in jail so often. These horrible comments got him in hot water with the Board of Trustees for Pelham Manor, but apparently not enough to get him fired. After “apologizing for his bad judgment,” the Board made Mosiello take a two-week suspension and forfeit 25 vacation days. He is now back on the job, and receiving his $187,000 annual salary.
People of color are disproportionately targeted and killed by police officers everyday in this country because of racism like that which Mosiello displayed. The safety of these communities should be the highest priority for city leaders. Sign the petition below to demand that Pelham Manor’s mayor fire Mosiello without delay.
Dear Mayor Sellier,
I am writing you today to express concern about your chief of police, Alfred Mosiello. He has shown himself to be a racist, and for that he should not be trusted to run your town’s police department.
I do not understand how you and the Board of Trustees came to the conclusion that the punishment you gave Mosiello was at all sufficient. The racism inherent in police departments as an institution is not some hypothetical, new-wave abstract concept—people of color, especially African Americans, are targeted and killed by the police every single day in the United States just because of the color of their skin. These emails show that Mosiello has active prejudices against these communities. Your willingness to keep him on as police chief despite his clearly-stated beliefs and attitudes demonstrate that you, and your town’s other trustees, have no interest in protecting people of color in your community.
People in positions of power all too often abuse that power. When racists are in those positions of power, the abuse of that power will, in turn, be racist in nature. Mosiello has betrayed your community’s trust and has no business being Pelham Manor’s chief of police anymore. I demand that you fire him at once.
