Target: Chapel Hill Police Chief Chris Blue
Goal: Charge the man who shot and killed three Muslim students with a hate crime.
A white male has confessed to the cold-blooded murder of three Muslim students in North Carolina. Though the police say that their investigation so far suggests that the crime was “motivated by an ongoing neighbor dispute over parking,” past anti-religious sentiments expressed by this killer, Craig Stephen Hicks, and the fact that all three students were wearing religious garb at the time suggest that this was motivated by something other than neighbor squabbles.
Islamophobia is a huge issue in the U.S. and in many other nations. Men and women in religious head coverings often face hateful harassment and have been attacked by people who subscribe to bigoted stereotypes that all Muslims are “terrorists” and want to harm Americans. Even non-Muslim individuals who wear head coverings for other religions have been attacked and killed for the crime of appearing to be Muslim.
With rising anti-Muslim rhetoric and violence across the globe, it’s very unlikely that this string of murders was simply over a parking dispute. The police investigating this crime need to recognize that Islamophobia is a serious issue with deadly consequences and treat it as such by punishing the murderer appropriately. Sign this petition to demand that police give Muslim people everywhere justice by charging Hicks with a hate crime on top of the existing murder charges.
Dear Chief Blue,
The killing of three Muslim students by Craig Stephen Hicks was a terrible crime and tragedy, one that we should all hope is never repeated. Unfortunately, due to widespread hatred of Muslim peoples, it almost certainly will happen again. Every day, Muslims and even non-Muslims with head coverings are harassed and called terrorists because of Islamophobic stereotypes and bigotry. And it’s only getting worse.
Though you’ve said that the shooting may be over a parking dispute, I’m sure you have enough wisdom and experience to know that things like this don’t happen over simple arguments about parking. This man has expressed anti-religious sentiment in the past and chose to target young people in religious head coverings for his deadly hatred. It’s extremely unlikely that this was not a hate crime, and it needs to be treated as such.
Muslim people in the U.S. and other countries deserve justice for the rampant discrimination and harassment they’ve endured, and for their fellow Muslims who have been murdered by people like Hicks. By charging him with a hate crime, you’ll prove that you recognize the struggles of Muslim individuals and that you won’t tolerate bigoted hate in your community. I urge you to charge Hicks with a hate crime on top of the murder charges.
