Punish Court Justice for Obstructing Gay Marriage

Target: Governor of Alabama, Robert J. Bentley

Goal: Discipline Alabama Supreme Court Justice Roy Moore for obstructing same-sex marriages.

In June 2013, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled in favor of same-sex marriages, thereby allowing all same-sex couples in the union to marry. However, the ruling was not followed by many other states in the country, which argued that state laws prevent marriage between same-sex couples. Nearly two years after the Supreme Court’s ruling, there are still states fighting the federal law. One such state, Alabama, recently overturned its ban on same-sex marriage. One person responsible for the obstruction is the state’s Supreme Court Justice Roy Moore, who told officials in the state not to issue marriage licenses to gay couples. This court justice is supposed to uphold the law, but instead is ignoring civil rights. Urge Governor Robert J. Bentley to punish Roy Moore for stopping gay marriage.

In January of 2015, a district court justice struck down Alabama’s ban on gay marriage. In response, the state sent a request to the Supreme Court to delay gay marriage, but was immediately denied. Despite the various obstacles and red tape that surrounded gay couples in Alabama, some couples decided to tie the knot despite the challenges.

At the heart of the debate, Alabama Supreme Court Justice Roy Moore told probates in the state not to issue marriage licenses to those who are gay. He believes that states have the constitutional right to define what constitutes a marriage. Moore intends to continue the fight against gay marriage, despite the backlash.

It is concerning that Moore’s record is not spotless. In 2003, Moore was removed from court by an ethics panel because he refused to remove a monument commemorating the Ten Commandments in a court building. A group also intends to have an ethics panel review Moore’s decision to obstruct gay marriage in the state, as this goes against what the Supreme Court ruled and violates basic human rights. If you believe that Moore violated the rights of gay couples, sign this petition and demand for immediate disciplinary action.

Dear Governor Robert J. Bentley,

Many citizens in the United States are not happy with the way Alabama handled gay marriage, as the state kept preventing gay couples from marrying. In defiance of the Supreme Court’s ruling, Alabama Supreme Court Justice Roy Moore told probates not to issue marriage licenses to gay couples. He insisted that states have a constitutional right to define marriage, but the Supreme Court has already determined that same-sex couples have a legal right to marry.

Those frustrated with the government want those responsible for the gridlock in marriage to be punished, especially Roy Moore. He told many probates not to issue marriage licenses and it’s obvious that he doesn’t support same-sex marriage. As a concerned citizen I want this man to be disciplined for obstructing the law and creating more chaos.
