Target: Governor of Alabama, Robert Bentley
Goal: Condemn Alabama judges who refuse to grant marriage licenses to gay couples
Judges in Alabama are now refusing to grant marriage licenses as an act of defiance to the United States Supreme Court after it became the 37th state to make gay marriage legal and began marrying gay couples. In 42 of the state’s 67 counties, judges have refused to issue marriage license to gay couples and some have shut down marriage operations altogether.
Alabama’s attorney general Luther Strange had asked the nation’s highest court to put a hold on allowing gay marriages to be legal until the nine justices decided whether or not it violated the Constitution, but the U.S. Supreme Court denied this request. This spurred Roy Moore, the conservative chief justice of Alabama’s Supreme Court, to order probate judges not to allow gay marriage licenses to be issued, completely ignoring the federal mandate that made the state’s ban on gay marriage ineffective.
Attorneys are now filing motions against probate judges to hold them in contempt of court, making the situation a complicated mess when it should be a happy day for gay couples. Alabama Governor Robert Bentley is not taking a strong stance on the situation and said that, “we will follow the rule of law in Alabama, and allow the issue of same-sex marriage to be worked out through the proper legal channels.”
Governor Bentley needs to go further than this and publicly condemn the probate judges and Chief Justice Moore for their refusal to grant gay marriage licenses. Please sign the petition below to let Governor Bentley that this refusal hurts Alabama and its citizens.
Dear Governor Bentley,
Alabama was recently allowed to grant marriage licenses to gay couples, but in at least 42 of the 67 counties, probable judges have refused to grant these licenses. This reflects very poorly on the state of Alabama, as does your refusal to punish or publicly condemn these judges.
Chief Justice Roy Moore instructed the judges to deny gay couples their marriage licenses and therefore deny them their basic human rights. What should have been a day of celebration and happiness has turned to a mess of frustration. The United States Supreme Court has ruled in favor for gay marriage to be legal, making the ban of gay marriage in Alabama null and void.
Do not let Alabama take such drastic steps backward. Publicly condemn the actions of Chief Justice Moore and the probate judges who are showing this act of defiance.
