Demand Lying Animal Shelter Convert to No-Kill Policy

Target: Cobourg Councillor Larry Sherwin, chairman of the Shelter of Hope board

Goal: Stop the inhumane murder of animals at the Shelter of Hope and put a new manager in place.

Shelter of Hope euthanized five cats brought in by a man in a gas chamber and then lied to him about it, telling him that four of them had been adopted by new families. The slow death of a gas chamber includes suffocating, choking and vomiting for these poor animals. The shelter is publicly-funded, so it must be held accountable in having a transparent relationship with taxpayers.

Elizabeth McKinlay, the shelter’s manager, only received a slap on the wrist 2-week suspension for this horrific crime. It’s evident that Ms. McKinlay is not equipped to carry out the responsibilities entailed in her job if she feels the need to lie in order to cover up gassing innocent animals to death. It’s necessary that she is removed from her position and a new manager is instated. A shelter is supposed to care for animals and find them a new home, not lead them to a disgusting death. New leadership is needed to step in and operate the shelter according to its policies.

Tax money should not go towards the heartless murder of dogs and cats. With the amount of funding the shelter receives and the volunteers willing to aide in the care of the animals, euthanasia should not be an option. Demand this shelter convert to a no-kill policy and become managed by an honest person who will truly care for these animals.

Dear Larry Sherwin,

Shelter of Hope told a man who brought in five of his cats that four of them had later been adopted, when in reality the shelter lied and euthanized the cats in a gas chamber. This murder was not only unnecessary, it caused these animals to suffer a drawn-out and sickening death. These kind of incidents should not be occurring at a publicly-funded shelter where taxpayers are expecting their dollars to go towards the care of animals and aid in finding them a new home.

The resources are in place to ensure this shelter can operate under a no-kill policy and carry out its mission of sheltering and finding new families for these pets. I urge you to terminate Elizabeth McKinlay, the shelter’s manager, and instate new leadership that will be transparent and honest with the public about the funds and ongoings of the shelter. I additionally urge you to adopt a no-kill policy at the shelter and remove the cruel gas chamber that should not be used as an option for handling these animals.

  1. Disgusting, barbaric, inhumane backward state!!! This is not an acceptable way to treat animals, and you should be ashamed.

  2. Put that witch in jail and her name on the ANIMAL ABUSER REGISTRY AND not let her ever work own or be near animals pets again!! Maybe she should get a whiff of the gas chamber so she can see what she put those animals through such a horrific senseless death!! The shelter needs to be NO KILL AS ALL SHELTERS SHOULD BE THEY NEED A SECOND CHANCE TO FIND HOMRS AND LOVE!!

  3. I say put their ass in the cage and let them be treated how the animals were treated… maybe that would teach these credents right from wrong.
