Target: Beth Zimmerman, Founder, Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of Pets for Patriots
Goal: Thank program for helping reduce the rate of American veteran suicides through pet adoptions.
According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, about 20 American Veterans commit suicide every day. A West Michigan program is working to prevent this from happening by helping veterans that are struggling with life after war while also saving animals at the same time. Since 2009, Pets for Patriots has helped over 700 veterans find loving pets to care for. Pets for Patriots teams up with veterinarians, rescue groups, and shelters to successfully run the program.
People who enlist in the military are gone for years at a time and end up coming back to a life that is completely foreign to them. After their service is complete, many veterans suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder and depression. Some of them go through overwhelming sadness because they lost a lot of their friends in combat. An average of 20 veterans commit suicide every day because it is so difficult for them to adjust to their old life back home. Statistics also show that thousands of animals are euthanized every day in the United States because no one is willing to take care of them.
Pets for Patriots creates a unique opportunity for members of the military to save a life by adopting homeless dogs and cats. To ease the financial burden of owning a pet, the program teams up with veterinarians to bring down the cost of pet care services, toys, and food. The organization’s goal is to create lifelong friendships for military people and animals.

Dear Beth Zimmerman,
Thank you for starting Pets for Patriots to help the people who risk their lives to serve for the United States of America. Your mission is to consistently give the gift of happiness to both people and pets, and I can see you have greatly achieved that goal. Your program is helping reduce the number of suicides and diminish animal homelessness at the same time.
The men and women in the military selflessly defend our country, so it is great to hear about a program that is fighting for their mental health and wellness. Your work is greatly needed and appreciated. Please continue your amazing efforts to both improve the lives of veterans and save homeless animals from unnecessary euthanization.
